Clitheroe 14 Blackburn 5

CLITHEROE returned to winning ways with a performance as committed as the

previous week's had been lacklustre. A nine-point winning margin indicates a

close-fought encounter. But in reality, the Littlemoor side were

always in control and gave the visitors few chsmcesWith only two team changes - Dave Barnes and Steve Graham returning - the transformation in the side's attitude was

remarkable. The heavy pitch dictated the game would

be won or lost among the forwards. Blackburn fielded a large pack, but supe

colleagues Dave Tattersall and Andrew Thom- ber were on hand to lend support at all times. The back row of captain Roger Holmes, Tim Hitchen and Barnes were first to the

rior technique from the Clitheroe eight always gave them the upper hand. Harry Proctor led the way, and his front row

tomed role of second row, and Bob Wilkinson showed a neat side-step for one so large, even if his passing was somewhat suspect. All the points came in the first half. Wilkinson claimed the first after a block

breakdown time and again. Alan Nuttall gave 100% in the unaccus

defenders to cross for the side's second. Each was accompanied by Malcolm

ON Saturday Clitheroe’s second team came away from Lostock with yet another victory, despite being without a

couple of key players. Clitheroe included new boys Dave Daven port and Chris Bosonett, who both had solid

games at wing-forward and centre. From the start Clitheroe took the initia

tive and held most of the territorial advan tage, but were unable to score until midway through the half. From the Clitheroe 22 metre line superb

sucked in the Lostock defence before slipping the ball to stand-in stand-off Richard Water- house, who crashed over for a try. Stott converted and Clitheroe looked com

fortable at half-time. Unusually Lostock were allowed back into

the game and mistakes cost the Cavaliers two converted tries and a penalty, giving the home side a 17-14 lead with only 12 minutes left on

the clock. Captain Phil Isherwood demanded more

commitment from his team, and he was not

disappointed. Steven Greatorex hammered his way

superbly, and only bad luck and poor referee ing stopped them from increasing their lead. Unluckiest of all was scrum-half Graham,

the home side's line. The second half saw Clitheroe defend
