England and Wales, but in recent years a disease caused by fungus, Phytophthora, has wiped out about 18,000 of the 580,000 in existence. The trees are impor tant for wildlife and their roots help stabilise river banks. The spread of such a disease will have a serious effect on river ecology, landscape and bank erosion. A leaflet has been produced about the disease and
offers landowners guidance on the management trees in both affected and unaffected areas. Members of the public are asked to contract their
local Environment Agency office if they spot a dir eased tree and should note the location as clearly possible.
