tempting Tempranillo. It is hardly a well-known grape, that is to those,

who dismiss Spanish wines, but it is a very versatile and highly individual wine to tempt those tiring palates back into life. It is grown in most parts of Spain, and to date is

not produced commercially in any other country. However, as Tempranillo takes the starring role in the making of Rioja — almost a Spanish equivalent of Claret as both are a mix of grape varieties — then there must be experimental nurseries in other coun tries, but I have not tasted the products from any of them. Like most countries who have recognised that we, the consumers, know a little about grape varieties

then most producers do put the grape variety on the label and have a uniformity of the wording for this grape which goes under many different names. In Rioja and Navarra it is called Tempranillo, in Ribera del Duero it is called the Tinto del Pais, in Toro the Tinto del Toro, in Valdepenas and La Mancha it is known as the Cencibel; and in Catalonia it is the UU de Llebre. Perhaps the only virtue it shares with the Cabernet Sauvignon is its suitability to be aged for either short or long periods in oak. (Some of the rarest and most expensive Rioja can be kept in oak casks for 30 to 40 years!). The five I can commend to you are a mixture of oak

and non-oaked but are all 100 per cent Tempranillo. My first is a very good marketing name, Scraping the Barrel, from Booth’s, at £3.39, coming from the DO of Utiel Requena. At this price, although the label says oak aged, this is only a brief period. The style here is of straightforward juicy fruit, not too complex nor too oaky and a “quaffing” wine, ine
