Newcastle Town’s win on Saturday put Newcastle beyond Clitheroe’s reach. Clitheroe have been beaten
just five times this season, the best record in the league, but Saturday’s draw at Shawbridge was their 14th of the season and that has cost them dear. Clitheroe had to come
from behind twice to earn a point in Saturday’s game. But they could have taken
an early lead when Paul Mullin’s header was cleared
off the line. N an twich h it ba ck
straight away with a shot from Ba tho which skimmed the Clitheroe bar. There were 27 minutes on
the clock when Nantwich’s deadly striker John Scar le t t — the league’s to p - scorer — poked the ball home from a Daryl Wilkes cross to put the visitors into the lead. A fte r going a goal up
Nantwich began to sit back and defend, and keeper Ball pulled off a great save to tip the ball over follow ing a g o od Clitheroe
attack. On the break strikers
Wilkes and Scarlett were always dangerous and Clitheroe keeper John M o rrey had to b e at his best to keep his side in the
game. Nantwich held the lead
until half-time, but the sec ond half was just five min utes o ld when Clitheroe levelled things. Top-scorer Mullin turned
and shot to give Ball no chance and put his side back in the game. - But with 64 minutes gone
N an twich were b a ck in front when a Gareth Row lands free-kick b ea t the unsighted Morrey in the
Clitheroe goal. An inspired substitution

Wolves lift cup after see-saw battle
L ITH E RO E Wolves Under 10s won the Burnley League W o l - stenholme Rink Cup in a see-saw
match at the Prairie. The Wolves, runners-up in the Under 10
Red League, beat Red League winners Brunlea 4-3 to reach the final, where they met Blue League champions Knuzden
Juniors. And again the Wolves upset the form
scored directly from a comer. Whalley continued to press after the break and Barnes scored again to make it
3-0 ■ Blue Star never gave up and James Nel son had to be on his toes to keep out a cou
ple of goalbound efforts before man-of-the- match Barnes scored his third and Whal- ley’sfourth.
. ... The Under 14s were presented with their ■
B Division championship medals before their game with West End, and as often
happens, this proved to b e the kiss of death for them as they lost 1-0. West End started the better and went
ahead after 15 minutes. Whalley could not get their act together
and had t o than k defenders W righ t McGauley, Pydliskj and Peel in goal for keeping the score down. But despite non-stop pressure after the
break, West End held out to progress to the Championship Play-off Final. □ Whalley Under 11s, in spite o f winning
their league this season, and the Under 15s, are b oth looking for players to join them for next season. Anyone interested should contact Andy
Stanworth (01254 822244) or Shaun Price (01254 822810) for the Under 11s, and Bill Stell (427042) for the Under 15s. □ Whalley celebrate a successful season with
their Presentation Evening at Mytton Fold Farm on Wednesday, May 21st, starting at 7- 30 pm. Guest celebrity is Blackburn Borers’ former England winger Stuart Ripley.
