God. This was a literal fact. Being so small of

stature, he was actually standing on a very thick volume of the Bible, thus enabling him to peer over the top of the reading desk at us. He stressed the fact that he could not have chosen a better foundation or a more uplifting method of approach. Although he probably improved on this, I am unable to recall any more of his mes sage. We sang, together, the words of that well-

known hymn “Will your anchor hold in the storms of life?” In the minds of my wife and I came vivid memories of a pre vious holiday in Vancouver, when we had sung that hymn in a church service and the minister had expertly played the accompaniment on a magnificent grand piano. I t rang out in perfect harmony with the organ and the congregation sang the words most sincerely to the glory of God. The tuneful melody of that lovely instru ment has, alas, now been-silenced focqverv

Privately owned, but stored temporarily in the church for regular use, it was destroyed, along with everything else, when vandals burned down the church a few weeks after our visit. Not content with this, they made four unsuccessful attempts to destroy the new church that was built to replace the original.

Why should there be such opposition from these people? I t was a beautiful church and vandals object to beauty and good ness. How do I know? I live near a school and see what happens

to daffodils growing in the churchyard, when the children slash them down return ing to their lessons after Easter. I cannot understand why they feel this compelling urge to destroy beauty, but I know they have it and grieve to see this annual scene of utter destruction.

Why pick on children to describe vandals?

I t seems to me that vandals have the immature minds of children, seeking

always to mar the things that are good, clean or beautiful. Children, thankfully, can grow to maturi

ty and develop minds that come to appre ciate beauty. Vandals so often stagnate into mindlessness. However, to come back to standing on the promises of God, Jesus teaches that if people want to they can come to Him. So, there is even hope for vandals who will accept His way.

Nigel of former

Of course for the 29,075 people in the Ribble Valley who did not vote

A

, for N ige l Evans, the jo y is slightly diminished, but only slightly. They do not have the simple pleasure of being p a r t o f the new movement which swept what Paddy Ashdown d e sc r ib ed as “ a t ru ly d re a d fu l party” out of power last week, but they can sti l l look forward to the next five years with excitement and

hope. For Nigel Evans himself, the future must

be a bit of a mystery. When he lost the famous by-election, he was at least repre senting the party that was in power and when he won he joined the party of gov ernment and was soon in its junior ranks. For the last five years, he has basked on

the Conservative benches, one of the peo ple close to the movers and shakers, some

body whose views were eagerly sought on almost anything by the national media. Now he will have to adjust to being one of

a much smaller number of men and women whose power and influence is, for the time being, pretty minimal. I t will be interesting to see how the job

prospects of Conservatives who have not been re-elected turn out. Whereas they could look to lucrative posts in a variety of directorships or on a number of quangos while their party was still in power, things may not be quite so rosy now. However, Mr Evans will clearly be much

in Conservative demand in terms of a shadow position. Anything to do with

Wales is clearly up for grabs as the party no longer has a representative there.

I t might be a mistake to go for that, though. He has been given an extraordi nary vote of confidence by Tories in the Ribble Valley, a tiny 1.4 per cent swing against him in an election where some shifts of opinion were running at almost 20 per cent and 10 per cent was ordinary.

s the poet said, “Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive..

As I see it I t would seem good sense for him to

acknowledge the debt he owes h^ support- ers by staying clear of the bloodbath that his remaining colleagues se*m intent on getting into over the party le ^ e i^ p .H e will have to come to terns with the frus trations of opposition. He can forget lus hardening Euro-sceptic position, one of the reasons surely why his party dH so appallingly nationally. A

national mmi-

mum wage will arrive, and businesses wiU survive it, whatever dire warangs he has

given in the past or anything he mtendsto say in the future. Nobody, nationally, wiu be very interested in his viewson these things, as there is nothing his party can do

about them. What he can do is to continue, and ,

strengthen, the excellent constituency work he has done in the past. Hopefully his membership of the Environment Select Committee will be renewed and he can continue to campaign for the physical quality of life in the Ribble Vahey through that, as well as his work in the debating chamber. His interventions in the Sawley Brow and Castle Cement issues have been useful and. in the latter case, willbeagam. Constituency business will be Mr Evans s

best way of ensuring that he is as hard to remove in five years as he was last week.

Meanwhile, New Labour will run the country with a rejuvenated Liberal Demo

crat Party to act as their radical con science, Labour will continue to run Lan cashire County Council and the Liberal Democrats— with the support of Labour — will continue to run the Ribble Valley^ And to complete William Wordsworth s

lines, “Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive, But to be young was very heaven” . And the importance of education and dealing with youth unemployment are issues the Government and the Liberal Democrats are united on. I t is time every youngster had something to look forward to.

Livewire who loves to read wins our monthly award

A G IR L with a wide variety of 1 interests is the latest Junior Reader

of the Month. Louise Makinson (eight), of Down- hain, who has won the competition for

a review of Enid Blyton’s “ The Famous Five” , is a livewire who loves

| to read. Her mum said: “Louise does all sorts of things, but any chance she gets to read,- she sits down and reads.” However, Louise, who lives at Green

Lane Farm, in Rimington Lane, has very

I little spare time. 11' She enjoys a variety of outdoor activi- _ i ties, which keep her going all week. She is

a member of the gym club at Roefield

] Leisure Centre, she swims for Clitheroe Dolphins and, in spite of that prowess, she still attends swimming lessons on a

| Sunday. The Year 3 pupil, who attends Pendle County Primary School, in Clitheroe, also loves walking and biking and she is a

| Brownie, as well. Living on a farm, she takes care of animals and can definitely be described as an outdoor girl.

I So, taking all this activity into account, how can Louise actually sit down and read? Well, she just makes time to do it.

Her mum says that she has read every book in the house and Enid Blyton is her

favourite at the moment. An extract of her review, which obviously

indicates the little livewire’s nature, reads: “ I enjoyed the book I read, because it was an adventure book and I love adventure books.”
