you. You are your own worst enemy.

It happens so easily does it not? Everything hangs on what you

want. The will is the thing that mat ters. The best story or illustration that

comes to mind to help you in your present state of spiritual ill-health is what is commonly known as the parable of the prodigal son, which I call the parable of the loving, heaven ly father. You know the story Jesus told, but

look it up in St Luke’s gospel, chap ter 15, and read it with yourself in mind. And when the young man came to

his senses, he realised how much bet ter off he would be in his father’s

house, even as a servant. The father gave him a warm, lovely

welcome and in love received him back as a son who had made a mis take.

Why do you think Jesus told this story?

YES, for someone like you, who has been away from the Father and who

missed him a great deal and longed for his return. What have you to do? Only believe that God is like all you have learned

of Jesus, always seeking to find the lost ones. Jesus used to say: “I am come to

seek and to save that which was lost.” That is why he had so much concern

Our Church of England friends admit this, using similar words in

their general confession prayer every week. Our Roman Catholic fraternity have

long appreciated the value of confes sion and sharing in the grace of our Lord’s loving understanding and for giveness.

We are called to forgive those who have wronged us in any way, and are assured that, in as much as we are able to forgive, so we can expect for giveness ourselves.

A FORMER resident of Painter Wood who has trained in the ancient teachings of Hawaiian Huna brought a bit of aloah

spirit to Blackburn recently. Mr Bryan Lowe, who now lives in

Exeter, held a workshop a t the Mount Pleasant Resource Centre educating those present in the secrets of Huna, which means ‘that which is hidden’. The teachings were guarded by Kahunas of which there are only a handful left in Hawaii. A former Clitheroe Royal Gram mar School pupil, Mr Lowe is one

of only two Europeans to complete the long and intensive training in London and the Hawaiian island of Kaua’i. He said: “Huna is about develop

ing and mastering physical, mental and life energy producing perfect harmony. The body and mind have amazing abilities and when the capacity of the body is enhanced with the power of our imagination anything is possible. Everything lit erally depends on your attitude to life.” As the workshop was so successful, Mr Lowe is now planning to run more.

Crafts on view at Salmesbury Hall

CRAFTY work by Whalley duo Chris Holgate and Margaret Naylor has led to the pair being invited to demonstrate their skills at Samles- buryHall. This week, the hall has been playing

host to an “at work” exhibition. It features a range of locally-produced handicrafts, all of which are for sale. There are also regular “how to” work

shops, given by, among others, Chris, who makes soft toys, and Margaret, who produces hand and machine knits. The hall is open daily except Mon

days from 11 a.m. to 4-30 p.m..

its “jam and Jerusalem” image behind and attract a younger membership. On this occasion, i t is those who are effectively the

backbone of the organisation who have proved their worth in compiling a book bound to become not only a local best-seller, but also a valuable history book. “Looking back over the 20th Century, so much has

changed in town and country within living memory — these are just a few snapshots of life in Lancashire as it was,” says the foreword to the first chapter: “Some Towns and Villages Remembered.” Recollections of Sabden, submitted by Eileen Harrop,

include a magnificent picture of the village in the days of cotton, with three mills producing cloth which was taken away by horse and cart, prior to the mills’ own lorries, to the station at either Simonstone or Whalley, before being

sold on the cotton market. By the early ’50s, up to three buses took workers to the mills, mainly from Padiham — the village having grown as mill owners built houses for their workers.

Another picture submitted by the same writer shows the ladies of the village on Walking Day in the 1900s. ■

Little Mitton WI recalls life in the air raid shelters of south Manchester, while planes droned overhead and bombs whistled all around, with the shelter mhabitants guessing how near “that one” was. Her 21st birthday was spent in the cellar and she vividly remembers the big blitz just before Christmas in 1940, after which she ventured into daylight to be met by debris everywhere, houses tot tering dangerously and “weary people, smoke begrimed and filthy, scrabbling amongst the remains of their homes trying to salvage what they could of their possessions, or

even searching for loved ones.” “Others were pushing their pathetic loads in prams or on _

handcarts to the temporary soup kitchens hastily set up in school halls or anything still standing,” she writes, adding'that the rights were seen along her route to work — despite the events of the long night, no-one thought of

The book was launched during the Lancashire Federation of Women’s Institutes’ Autumn Council Meeting at Vic toria Hall, Bolton, on Tuesday, and follows the successful “Lancashire Village Book.” Priced at £8.95, it is available from local booksellers and published by Countryside Books.
