and, with Clitheroe struggling on 46-6, it looked as if Earby might snatch an unlikely victory. But with plenty of overs left all it
needed was som body to hang around and Mick Dewhurst was the man to deliver, scoring a match-winning unbeaten 58 in the
process. He was supported by Andy Robin
son who had made 22 before Har vey had him caught by Hipgrave.
But it was too late to save Earby
and Clitheroe passed the winning score with three overs and three wickets to spare. Clitheroe followed up that crucial
triumph with a 36-run win against Baxenden at Chatburn Road on
Sunday. The locals had first use o f the
wicket, and despite losing Neil and Mark Bolton cheaply, Robinson and Hall put on a superb stand of
126 which set up Clitheroe for the victory. The pair ran well between the
wickets and also peppered the boundary with regularity until Hall was caught behind having made 64. Professional Fielding couldn't stick
around with Robinson, and Whal iey was dismissed on six, although he and Robinson had shared 28. Whalley's was the last wicket to
fall though, and Robinson went on to complete a fine century, with Dewhurst helping him see the overs out as Clitheroe finished on 217-5. Robinson ended unbeaten on 104,
hit off 145 balls, including 12 fours. Clitheroc’s attack struck early as
they defended their total, with Simon Bishop having Collins caught behind by Robinson with the score on four in the second over. Baxenden’s top order batsmen
then strung together three decent partnerships to give their side a chance of victory. Professional Payne and Rishton steadied the ship, sharing 35 before
Payne was run out on 25, and skip per Bushell joined Rishton to add 52, o f whcich Rishton was the major contributor with his captain trapped by Seedle on nine. Rishton was finally out on 72,
bowled by Fielding, but only after a stand of 44 with Mortimer, tak ing Baxenden to 135-4. But the locals managed to disrupt
the run chase with a flurry of wick ets after that, although the bonus points proved elusive. Dewhurst got in on the act, having Mortimer caught behind after a quickfire 34 with another 15 runs on the board, and Jackson followed via a run out. Dewhurst then bowled Hargreaves

CONVINCINGLY beating Glusbum, Chatburn seconds eased to an 87-run victory
on Saturday. The locals batted first and
were given a solid start by Clough (26) and John Trot ter (20), but then followed a
collapse. Respectability was restored
with an unbeaten stand of 65 between Geoff Lambert
(46) and Brian Jones (17), resulting in a final score of
142-8. Glusburn had no answer to
the bowling and fielding of Chatburn, with no batsman reaching double figures. Jones (3-23) and Clarkson
(3-27) took the bulk of the wickets as the visitors were
skittled for 55, while debu tant Matthew Bibby was

badly with Nawaz failing again when he was caught and bowled by Barlick pro fessional James Peterson without scoring. Graham Bardlsey followed
after making five with the score on just six. Read were then reduced to
just 10-3 when Little was next to go, caught by Brown off Stead. With Parsons and King
both going cheaply Read were in real trouble at 42-5 off just 18 overs. Then came the rescue act
from Peter Usher and O’ Connor — Usher had made a valuable 51 by the time he was ou t with the Read score having been pushed on to 86-6. Shirtcliffe and O’Connor
took the score past the 100 mark, but with 141 on the board Shirtcliffe was run out for 22. Overs eventually ran out
with the score on 161-8 — O’ConnOr still there having made a fine unbeaten 54.
Scothern and Lord opened
the Barlick innings and started off well taking the score to 24 before Lord was bowled by Heyworth for 19.
Heyworth struck again to
see o f f Naylor for 19 and Peterson joined the fray. With 13 overs left
Bamoldswick required 83 runs to win and remained in the driving seat until Manville and Barker both went quickly to leave Barlick with 35 runs to gel off the
last four overs. Heyw’orth, the pick o f
Read’s attack, took the vital wicket of Peterson when he was caught in the deep by Nawaz and the balance swung in Read’s favour. Nawaz removed Whipp for
six and then clean bowled Harker in the same over before Kingdon fell to Hey worth and Nawaz finished things off, bowling Charnley to take the final Barlick wicket with the score on 138.
This weekend sees the two
teams meet up again for the Ramsbottom Cup final — a match will be a 48 over affair with both sides needing five bowlers.
A different venue — the
match with be played at Clitheroe — and a big crowd will surely provide the ingre dients for a real thriller.
Before then Read will hope
to regain some ground in the title race when they enter tain Baxenden on Saturday.
A SUPERB opening partnership of 184 from Paul Mackintosh and John Kearsley set Whaliey up for their third win of the season and the dou ble over Edenfield on Saturday at Gincroft Lane. Mackintosh made a century, with Kearsley not far
behind on 78, Whaliey finishing on 227-7. And the Whaliey bowlers backed up the baiting perfor
mance. with Dave O’Neill again outstanding, helping restrict Edenfield to 173-8 in reply. Mackintosh and Kearsley looked immovable at the wicket
as they found the boundary with regularity and ran well between the wickets.
’ f“
They brought up three fig ures together, and were well
on the way to the 200 mark when they were finally sep arated on 184, Mackintosh stumped by Bums o f f pro fessional Keith Roscoe.
Macintosh had made 101,
including 10 fours and four sixes in almost two hours at the crease.
Whaliey paid man Mark
Fallon fell to Roscoe with a n o th e r 12 runs on the b o a rd , and R o s c o e then c laimed his third vic tim , seeing o f f Kearsley on 78 with the score on 197.
Four more wickets fell in
the rem a in in g ov ers, Roscoe going on to take 5- 55 off 16 overs, with Whal iey setting an intimidating
total of 2277. E d en f ie ld sk ip p e r John
Kershaw and Burns pu t together a decent start to th e ir reply, sh a r in g 55 before the latter was caught by Westwood off Foster on
ton a return catch on 39 with Edenfield on 74, and Ilawke and Wright put up dogged resistance for the third wicket. T h e y p u t on 49 b e fo re
Gorton had Ilawke caught by O’Neill. A f t e r th a t , with some

wicket — his third — but W h a l ie y c ou ld n ’ t qu ite snatch the bonus points. O’Neill ended with 3-38 off 14 overs, with Fallon and Gorton both chipping in with two wickets apiece.
But i t was a different story on Sunday as Padi-
Good light stops play!
AN unusual entry in the Ribblesdale Wanderers scorebook claims that GOOD light stopped
play. On Saturday 10 minutes were lo s t
in the
Oswaldtwistle Immanuel innings because o f ... bright sunshine! In the end the glare of sun
light shining through the sight-screens reduced the matches to a 41-oversper- side contest. And it was one that Ribbles
dale won convincingly. Professional Gurinder Pal
Singh was in devastating form with the ball. Having removed opener
Snape and third man GHarinder cheaply, he
struck with a vengeance later on to remove three more Immanuel batsmen and see the home side reduced to 112-9 at the end of their innings.
The professional was well-
supported by economical bowling from Ian Britcliffe — 1-33 from 10 overs — and David Howard with 2-26 from 13. It was a total that should
never have posed Wanderers too much of a problem. And so it proved as they won with almost eight overs to spare. Richard Palmer and Martin
Davies shared 36 for the first wicket to get the reply off to a solid start. John Rain then shared a fur ther 21 with Davies but the
two followed each other in quick succession. That left Singh (27) and
Martin Briggs (24) to take the locals to the brink of vic

cession and were followed by Wilkson for a duck. But Paul Spencer and skip
per Stephen Proctor hung around for long enough to see Wanderers home to a five- point win. The sun, however, did not
shine on Wanderers’ fortunes on Sunday when they lost by 52 runs to a resurgent Great
Harwood side. Wanderers struck regularly
early in Great Harwood’s innings through Britcliffe
(twice) and a run out. But Paul Allen refused to budge until Harwood had
reached 184-5 when he was finally caught for 95 off just 107 balls faced.
It proved to be a long, hard
afternoon for the Wanderers with none o f the bowlers having much to cheer about.
ESPITE suffering an extremely rare defeat on Saturday, Clitheroe seconds still hold an 11-point lead at the
top of the First Division. Mid-table Earby batted first at the Apple-
garth, and it was Wilson who did the damage for the home side, crashing 130 in their total
of 247-4. Bibby hit 64 in reply for Clitheroe, but the
locals fell 70 runs short on 177-9. Rivals Salesbury took advantage with a
nine-wicket win over Blackburn Northern, but they could not take the two bonus points. Simon Duckworth made 69 for Ribblesdale
Wanderers’ second string, helping the locals to a five-wicket win over Belvedere after the Burnley side had made 212-7. Read seconds, however, fell 110 runs short as they were well beaten by Great Harwood,

Baxenden. bowling out the home side for 109 before recording a six-wicket win, and there was also a victory for Ribblesdale Wanderers thirds, who had an eight-wick et cruise against Great Harwood, with Cottam unbeaten on 71 as the locals overhauled Har wood’s all-out 157, after Devine had taken 5-
70.
18. Kershaw gave Simon Gor
ham won with almo st 12 overs remaining.
Ba tt ing f irst , the Sta
tion Road side struggled to an all-out 115. But it could have been dif
ferent for the Ribbie Valley outfit after standing at 76-3.
Padiham professional Grant
struck early, seeing off skip per Nick Keighley with the score on eight.
John Kearsley and profes
sional Mark Fallon added 25 before the latter was bowled by Stephen Gee, and Kears ley and Graham backed up that partnership, sharing 34 until Graham was trapped by Padiham skipper Pankaj Tripathi on 19.
Tripathi sent back Andy
Pratt with the score on 78, and then Gee took com mand. He bowled Grace without
scoring, and then removed Foster on seven, and Lee Burgess on two, the latter two both with the assistance of stumper Andy Robinson.
Gee then finally ended the
stubborn resistance of Kears ley on 68, and Whaliey had collapsed to 114-S. Dave O’Neill lasted two
balls before Gee claimed his sixth scalp, and Grant tied up the innings, bowling Westwood with Whaliey ending on 115. Gee’s superb haul o f six
wickets came at a cost of a miserly 29 runs conceded off 15 overs. In reply, Padiham lost Neil
Anderson to O’Neill without getting o f f the mark, and although they lost a further five wickets, Whalley’s total was never going to pose too much of a problem. Tripathi and Sharif shared
32 before both fell, and Gary Pethard and Woodvine were both dismissed as the locals stood at 52-5.
But Mehmood’s knock of 46
set Padiham up for maxi mum points, and Grant (7 not ou t ) and Gee (18 not out) knocked up the winning runs to see the defending champions home to a com prehensive win. Saturday secs Whaliey have
home advantage against the current league leaders,
Bamoldswick.
