Clitheroc 16, Leigh 22
CLITHEROE entertained Leigh on Saturday in what proved to be the most exciting game of the season so far, even if the result did go in favour of the visitors. Due to injury and unavailability, Clitheroe had to make

numerous changes to the team that won last week, Stuart Greatorex recalled at centre, Kris Tyces returning on the wing, Dave Tattersall at scrum-half, Mike Chambers in at hooker and Nick Green in the second row, all acquitted
themselves well. Greatorex in particular showed good form, and he was
voted man-of-the-match by his team-mates. The game was played with a strong breeze blowing down the pitch and skipper Mike Francis elected to play into it ■
in the first half. A good crowd had gathered by kick-off time and the Lit-
tlemoor side treated them to probably the best 30 min
utes of rugby this season. Leigh, previously unbeaten, opened strongly, but excel
lent defence kept them out. Defence was turned into attack and Clitheroe took the
lead with a try out of the top drawer. The Greatorex brothers combined to good effect, Stuart
making the initial break from inside his own half. He took the ball down to the Leigh 22 and switched it
back inside for Steven to take the pass and score under the posts. Dave Watson converted for a 7-0 scoreline. From then on the home side set up attack after attack,
only for good Leigh defence to repel them. With half-time approaching Leigh then levelled the score
with a converted try. The second-half opened with both sides committed to
attack, but it was Clitheroe who took the lead. A penalty was awarded after several good forward drives
and Watson made it 10-7. Two more penalties followed, both from Watson, and
things looked good with Clitheroe well in control at 16-7. But the game was far from over and Leigh hit back with
a try and a penalty to make it 16-15. Worse was yet to come when Leigh took the lead for the first time in the match following a long-distance kick and
chase try. The conversion made it 16-22, but as with all good dra
mas, there was a controversial ending. With time against them and deep inside their own half, Chambers produced the perfect line-out throw, and Mar
tin Wigley secured possession. The ball was moved quickly down the three-quarters
where Tyas and Andrew Burrill swapped passes in a 60- yard dash down the touchline, Tyas taking the final ball
to score in the comer. Leigh were dejected, Clitheroe ecstatic—until the refer ee noticed the linesman flagging for a foot in touch. The
try was disallowed and the game lost. Veteran player-coach Roger Holmes said: "We all learned
a lesson today, no game is over after 70 minutes. “We sat back on a nine-point lead and let them dictate play. You can be sure we won’t let it happen again.” Clitheroe: Burrill, Tyas, Stuar t Greatorex, Steven
HMP Garth 0, Clitheroc Cavaliers 11
THE jailhouse was well and truly rocked as Clitheroe Cavaliers were entertained by the inmates of Garth
Prison on Saturday. Keen to preserve their unbeaten start to the season it was
thought by some that the atmosphere may unsettle the
guidance of old heads captain Phil Isherwood and Tony Dubowski, the forwards were soon dominating in most
Cavaliers, but this was not the case. Clitheroe kicked off playing into the wind and, under the
areas of set play. Martin Allen and gutsy Simon Hall — he played with an
injured shoulder — provided real power in the scrumage. Atkinson made some useful (and some useless) blindside
breaks b u t the solid defence of Garth remained unbreached leaving the score 0-0 at half-time. The Cavaliers started the second half with a determina tion and level-headed approach which paid handsome div
idends. Settled ball from the hard-working pack and Atkinson s
vision released the backs, and quick hands provided the overlap and an opportunity for Mick Rowley to score. Garth tried to respond but Clitheroe soon had the game sealed with a penalty and a drop goal — both from
Slinger. The Cavaliers played percentage rugby for the last 10
minutes and although it was not a classic display, it was very effective in recording a sixth consecutive victory and panother blank score-sheet for the preserving another
blank score-sheet. At Littlemoor this Saturday the Cavaliers will need a
solid performance and plenty of support if they are to topple an in-form Oldham XV. Kick-off is at 3 p.m..

THE highly-rated Surrey side were extremely impressed with the beauty of the Ribble Valley and the majestic
backdrop of Pendle Hill. However they had little else to remember from their visit,
as the local side demolished them with a 10-try display and their best rugby of the season. Fly-half and skipper Tommy Barnes orchestrated nearly

every move as the home pack cleaned up in every depart ment to produce good quality ball for the talented back
division. Tries to Ortega, Rathwell, Emery, Hayhurst and Bur
rows were all created unselfishly by Barnes, as the green and whites raced into a 31-0 half-time lead. The second-half continued in the same vein as Barnes
himself scored two well-deserved tries, the second a spec tacular effort from 60 yards to cross in the corner. To rub salt into the wounds he duly thumped over the
conversion from the touchline. Further tries to Hayhurst and Metcalf added to the vis
itors’ misery before Blake Emery completed the scoring
with arguably the try of the match. Collecting the ball near his own line, he dipped his shoul
der and took the shortest possible route through two defenders, leaving them dazed and sprawling on the ground before racing fully 70 yards to score in the comer. Yet again Barnes converted and mercifully the referee
blew the final whistle early, leaving Danes Hill with a long, long journey home and a few questions to be asked on the return journey.
A GROUP of traditionally unpopular and beleagured men arc asking for people to join their ranks. Clithcroe Referees’ Society is on the look-out for new members and it is inviting anyone, who is interested, to attend its next monthly meeting to find out & little bit more about being a “man in the middle”. It might not seem unreasonable that, if referees are
viewed as unpopular (this is, of course, with footballers), their societies will not have too many members. But the reality of the situation, in Clitheroe, is that many of the present group arc just getting old. Soon, they will be too old and they will have to be replaced. There are 15 members of the group, at present, who ref
eree in all the local leagues. Their next meeting will be held at the New Inn, on Par son Lane, in Clitheroe, on Wednesday, kick off 8 p.m. Red cards will be issued on the night! For more information, you can contact group secretary
Mr Gordon Dixon on 01200422739. Thank You

IN-FORM Mike Bennett stormed to a runaway victory in the single Stableford competition held
at Clitheroe Golf Club on Saturday. Bennett compiled 44 points and won by seven from Mike Fletcher, David McKenzie, Don Partington and Mike
Thompson. Alan Parker, Bernard Bithell and Bryn Hart were on win
ning form in the individual medal on Sunday. Parker returned 78-12-66 to win Division One ahead of
Ray Taylor (79-11-68) and Alan Wright (80-1169). A round of 86-16-70 enabled Bithell to top Division Two
on the card from Philip Walmsley (84-14-70), Gary Thompson claiming third place with 85-14-71. Hart shot 94-24-70 to win Division Three convincingly ahead of David Woodworth (101-28-73) and Jim Fumell
(95-22-73). Junior Captain Daniel Preedy won the gross award with a
round of 75. • A card play-off was necessary to decide the outcome of
the greensome event at Whalley. Gary Blades and Andrew Hemmington returned 71-665
and gained the verdict ahead of Eric Lord — Mr Captain that is—and Tom Heyworth (861665). 0 The final event of the season at Stonyhurst Park saw
Robert Driver compile 35 Stableford points to win the Dave Brown Trophy after a card play-off with Ray Ormerod. The “fair sex” prize went to Joanne Garstang
with 28 points. Although Dave Raw did not figure too prominently in
this event, he has still had a season to remember—slash ing eight strokes off his handicap to win the club’s Most Improved Player of the Year award. The Bernard Marsden-John Simpson lifted the Mike
Trophy Trophy after defeating Chris Ryan and John Hodkinson in the final of the men’s greensome knockout. While Geoff Pallister overcame Tony Dobson 3 and 2 in the men’s singles knockout and was rewarded with the
Ken Wooley Trophy. Derek Bramwell and Derek Ingham have qualified to
represent Stonyhurst Park in the Daily Mail foursomes
Greatorex, Jacques, Watson, Tattersall, Proctor, Cham bers, Francis, Wigley, Green, Holmes, Nuttall, Taylor.
next year. Divisional winners in the October medal were Steve Wilcock (73 nett), Ted Crosby (67 nett) and Steve Brown (64 nett).

Between the age of twenty and forty, It's I suppose the happiest time, 7 days a week living life to the full, Just then it all starts to decline, But John you're forty and life begins (is a quote from a wise old sage), Believe me it's not true, it's now all down hill on the slippery slope to old age.
