UNITED by a love of singing, members of the nibble Vale Choir travel miles to share their love of music and give pleasure to audiences far and wide. A week on Saturday, the choir, under the baton
of founder Ernest Tomlinson, is giving a concert in Clitheroe Parish Church hall. Many will remember the autobiographical evening
of music presented by the founder in the council chamber a year ago. Popular as a composer of light orchestral music which has been played all over the world, Ernest Tomlinson is perhaps less well known for his original compositions and arrangements of songs for choirs, many of which will be performed at next weekend’s event; indeed, one song will be receiving its first ever performance, more than 50 years after Mr Tomlinson wrote it — as a very young man. Based in the Ribble Valley, with rehearsals at
Barnacre School, Longridge, Ribble Vale’s repertoire is not the great oratorios of the classical composers but a remarkable collection of over 150 glees, madri gals, choruses and songs, some well known, some less so, some over 400 years old and some only just pub lished. Sacred or secular, serious or humorous, tran quil or lively, there is something for everyone. Bach, Mozart, Brahms and Finzi are represented. There are pieces from opera, musicals and oratorio, as well as folk song arrangements from the British Isles and the USA. The choir is actually three-in-one. Not only a four-
