Another keynote in the

school’s history was in the 1950s, when the then headteacher, Mrs L. Met calfe, fostered a love of the violin among her pupils and produced an ensemble of first-class child musi cians. The strains of violin music could often be heard em a n a t in g from th e schoolhouse and the sight of children carrying violins along the leafy lanes of the village was a familiar one.

Novel rescue plan saves pet Maisie

THE little black and tan mongrel that went missing on Waddington Fell three weeks ago has been reunited with her owner — thanks to a search-and-rescue plan by the Ribble Valley Kennels and Catteries organisation.

The association asked

local fanners to be on the look out for Maisie, owned by Bowland High School teacher Mrs Maureen 01s-

zewska. When a sighting at Barrow — some 10 m i le s away — was reported a humane fox trap was used to catch the runaway.

Maisie went missing

while staying with a friend while Mrs Olszewska and her husband, Les, were away on holiday. An appeal in the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times for help in tracing the pet fol lowed and several mem bers of the association joined forces in a construc tive plan of action for the safe return of Maisie.

Snow causes road havoc

SNOW and ice played havoc on the Ribble Val ley’s roads this week — and one senior police officer described the driv ing conditions as the worst he had seen in 30 years. As more snow is pre

dicted, the police are con tinuing to warn motorists to drive carefully when on icy roads. Already the freezing

conditions have resulted in two accidents this week. Insp. Ian Hartley, of

Colne police, said: “The conditions were the most

appalling I have seen in my 30 years in the police

service. “Drivers must take care

on the more isolated coun try lanes, where snow can drift on to the road and gritting is not as regular

as on the major roads.” On Tuesday a Manches

te r man suffered minor injuries, when he lost con trol of his car and it col lided into a drystone wall near Gisbum at 8 a.m. In another crash at the

same time, two cars were involved in a collision on the Gisburn to Hellifield road. The drivers suffered minor injuries. Drifting snow and ice

were responsible for most of the problems in the vil la g e s . D r iv e r s were delayed as they battled into work on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. However, while several

villages were hit by snow, the roads in Clitheroe remained clear. Insp. Hartley added: “I have rjpthing but praise
