looped over Gary Stones in the Salford goal, but Stones caught the ball well before dropping it a t the feet of the advancing Riley. The keeper dived on the ball
but it got caught between his legs as Riley frantically tried to
force it into the net. Finally, the keeper got a hand to it and the danger was averted. Danger came at the other end
for Clitheroe when Paul Mars- den found himself in space down the r ig h t a f te r Neil Baron had mis-timed an attempted interception. Marsden raced towards Carlo
Nash's goal but Baron did well to recover and close the for ward down. He could not find space for the shot and ended up blasting the ball wide. When Clitheroe finally took
the lead on the half-hour mark, the goal could not have come in a simpler fashion. The Blues won a corner on the
right which was swung into the area by winger Hill.
Central defender Baron rose
highest and met the ball with a firm header which the Salford keeper could not keep out. The best move of the game fol lowed a minute after the goal. Chris Grimshaw knocked the
ball in to Riley who played it back to Butcher in the middle of the pitch. Butcher’s first time ball found
hard for Clitheroe’s cause with out having too many chances. Mullin almost restored the
lead just minutes after coming on but he was beaten to a Grimshaw through-ball by the Salford keeper. Clitheroe’s second goal came
Andy Rouine on the right and his cross was inch-perfect for Clive Dunn a t the far post but the striker headed narrowly past wide. After the break Clitheroe went off the boil and stopped going forward. They seemed to sit back con
ten t to soak up the Salford pressure and in the end they
paid the price. For the first 20 minutes of the
half they looked comfortable, but Salford had so much of the ball it seemed only a matter of time before they made the breakthrough. It came half-way through the
half and as a result of some great skill from Salford’s Chris Gardner. The tiny quicksilver striker
controlled a looping cross superbly to lay the ball into the p a th of the advancing Matthew Smith. The Salford number nine

his free-kick from the left was headed down by a Salford defender into the path of Butcher who fired past Stones from close range. Hill was replaced by Taylor
straight after the goal and he immediately made an impact on the game. Taylor found himself free
down the right and his cross found Mullin in the area. The Clitheroe s tr ik e r was
unchallenged and left to take his time with a finish which was perfectly excecuted and left Stones with no chance. Clitheroe were not finished yet
and with just two minutes to go Baron bundled in his second and the Blues’ fourth to com plete a remarkable final 10 minutes. Clitheroe: Nash, Lampkin,

The Blues really didn’t settle into their game as Rossendale refused to allow them time on the ball. They carved out a good chance on the half-hour when Paul Mullin headed on for Andy Dar byshire who cut inside the defender but saw his fierce drive well saved by former Burnley keeper Chris Pearce in the Dale goal. with his follow-up. Clitheroe’s defence was caught napping again at
the start of the second-half when they gave the ball away on the half-way line and Rossendale were allowed to carry the ball into the penalty area unchallenged. From close range the Dale striker put his side back into the lead. Andy Roiune was then brought into the fray and immediatly made an impact as Clitheroe
started to apply some pressure. Clive Dunn was particularly instrumental in a
number of Clitheroe attacks and was unlucky not to score himself when he watched a powerful shot skim the Rossendale post. With 20 minutes left on the clock the pressure
finally told and Clitheroe drew level. A corner was floated into the box by sub Chris Grimshaw and Mullin rose to head the ball tamely towards the goal. The flight seemed to deceive everybody, includ ing Pearce, and the ball ended up nestling in the back of the net to earn Clitheroe a point. Clitheore: Nash, Lampkin, Smith, Westwell,
