Marsh (March 7th) seems to be one of several Clith- e ro mans who can find nothing to admire or eniov in our quality of life.

4. All new housing in Clith eroe is in areas specifically
designated in the approved local plan. I agree with Mrs Marsh on one point only and regret any
diminution of service at the
local police station. This, how ever, was a decision outside the control of the borough council, to which we objected strongly at the time.
I f Mrs Marsh finds her life
here so miserable, why does she not leave? There are hun dreds, if not thousands, of peo ple who very much want to come and live in the Ribble Valley.
Thank you for bringing shame to our notice
WE are indebted to Helen McKinlay and to Lucy Leoni for reminding us tnat the_ continued export of British arms to the murderous regime m Indonesia for use in its illegal occupation of East Timor involves deceit on the part of our leaders and shame for all of us. I , too, have written to
our MP about i t . He passed the letter on to the Fore ign lOffice, which repliecf that it1; kept a very gtreful check on the use of British weapons (I blush to write it), that the Hawk was a training aircraft, not suitable for, air-ground strafing and bombing (con t r a ry to the evidence given on TV by Alan Clarke, formerly minister fo r m i l i ta ry p ro cu re ments), that her Majesty’s Government preferred to work by bringing quiet

(which in '21 years .has achieved nothing whatso ever for hitman rights, though many aircraft have been sold and maty East Timorese slain in the meantime). The firal argu ment was that jols were at stake. No one wishes to

Still waiting for reply from the planners
I HAVE seen no reply to Mr and Mrs A. D. Caunce’s letter, or mine, .regarding essential services being over-stretched die to indiscriminate house building, and the recent leter from Mrs Joan Marsh, puts the matter more eloquently than I. So why don’t the planners grasp (he nettle and give a reply through your newspaper'

Do yojU remember — like we friends do?
THE other evening I was with sane friends who were at school with me long ago.
At our advanced y e a r s , most of our thoughts vere of yes terday —: the future was not d?velt on!
You knew how it is —
do you iemember . . .? Some of is tried to recall
market. We seemed to remember that on Satur day nights everything was open until nine o’clock. A night out would be the first house at one of our three cinemas, followed by supper at Thompson’s chip shop at one end of the ma rk e t a re a. Do you
the shops: that were once along each side of Castle Street. You get so far and then come to a blank. We tslked of our old
r em em b e r th e long wooden building — chips to take out or eat on the premises? The long space was used for tables and forms to sit on. Oh, one could go on and on. . . We then switched to
some of the characters in our town; lots of folk we knew. Then one of our group said: “Mary Pick- ford — fancy not talking of her!” Did she live in Low Moor? She was always walking around the town; always cheerful. Some times one came across her in clubs or Boots. Sud denly a picture of her came to our minds. Who else was about?
Any other character to bring out of our stock of memories? Come on, just have a think. . .

Incidentally, one group who may not be so anxious to stay
here are those who have reason to fear the town’s CCTV sys tem. Although we are aware that one outstanding success, does not finally prove that it will reduce crime, especially in town c e n t r e sh op s , and increase the number of crimi nals caught, nevertheless your front page article last week must be most encouraging to our local police and indicates
the wisdom of the Conserva tive view that, despite the present financial crisis facing the borough, the system must- not be scrapped and forgotten.

Here’s to next order for British aircraft
HOW refreshing it is for someone to sup port our local military a i r c r a f t b u s in e s s instead of knocking it. Ye s, I mean Nigel Evans — well done, Nigel. The knockers who wrote
millions in the local econ omy which keeps countless others in work. There’s never been a complaint about that, has there?
Never mind screaming
condemning the sale of Hawk aircraft to Indonesia must not realise that Brit ish Aerospace indirectly, through the workforce and the workforces of many local suppliers, spends
that the Hawks are used to kill innocent people, thousands are killed every year in our own country, but not by Hawk je ts . What about the deaths being caused by traffic — but I ’ve never heard of groups of people protest ing about these deaths outside the car factories,
never mind breaking into those factories to damage their cars. Let us not forget that, if
British Aerospace did not sell planes to Indonesia, somebody else would and our out-of-work figures would be much higher. Here’s to the next order
for military aircraft to Br itish Aerospace and long may they reign.
