Meetings to plan bids for lottery

money TWO meetings aimed at encouraging Ribble Valley organisations to apply for

lottery funding are planned for April. The announcement was

made during a meeting of the borough council, after Coun. Peter Evans (Wilp- shire) asked for budget money to be set aside for lottery applications.

Coun. Evans said: “We are

getting more experienced about how lottery money can be obtained — you have got to throw some bait at the grants you want.”

The council’s leader, Coun. Chris lioltdm (Wilpshire), agreed th a t an initial investment \vas needed to attract the lottery funding. He said: “Bait is required. We have made provision for money to be set aside. If we are to attract the millions or tens of millions, then the thousands must be put in.”

Councillors heard that the

authority :was'\currently looking to* invest in her itage, sports development and arts development, with a view to future lottery applications.;

'• [ However, the April meet

ings are for local organisa tions planning to submit lottery bids. The meetings are being organised by the council’s Rainbow Group, which is co-ordinating the authority’s lottery bid for Clitheroe Castle.*

Coun. Holtom said the

meeting would offer organi sations advice about bids. An advice leaflet would also be made available.

No dates were given for the meetings.

towards the NCH charity, which is the child care arm of the Methodist Church.

bers, aged from 10 to 26, will take part in a range of activities covering the mix ture of social, craft and pro fessional skills which make membership of the young farmers so popular. There are 26 clubs in the

county and 25 of them will be represented in the events, which are centred on Longridge High School, with outdoor competitions being held at Little Town Farm, Thornley, and Hothersall Lodge. Events at Longridge

include travel reports, health and safety in the kitchen, aerobics, junior team public speaking, intermediate brainstrust, after-dinner speaking and a range of club displays. At Little Town Farm there will be fence erecting, farm maintenance and mechani cal tasks, and an ATV chal lenge. A junior country spotters’ competition is being held at Hothersall Lodge. A spokeswoman a t the young farmers’ Ribblesdale Centre said: “Young people seem to get such bad pub licity these days. An event like this really shows the public the good in them and just what they can do.”

Wednesday Club enjoys a visit to country hotel the

Wednesday Club trav elled to Harrop Fold Country Hotel, Bolt- on-by-Bowland, for their monthly meeting. A treat awaited members

when j chef Jonathan Davies took on the role of the TV programme “Ready Steady Cook” and prepared a meal using ingredients selected by members of the club.

A simple, but effective,

s ta r te r of melon and prawns, together with filo moneybags filled with port

preserve, certainly had the taste buds tingling. For the main course, lamb chops from Harrop Fold’s own herd, and dressed iyith rosemary, looked very tasty. Jonathan deftly boned each one before fry ing in butter and olive oil. While the chops were lett to cool he prepared vegeta bles, in the style often used by top chefs, by shaping carrots, potatoes and turns into little barrels, boiling, refreshing, and leaving on one side to reheat later The vegetables were accompanied by a simple-

chops, Jonathan proceeded to wrap each one’ in puff pastry and cook them quickly in the oven until golden brown. He made a delicious sauce and offered everyone a chance to taste each of the dishes. His piece de resistance was a fresh strawberry flambe.

After sampling all the

delightful dishes, members retired to the dining room of the hotel for supper.

Everyone agreed the cook-

in was a great success and expressed a wish to repeat the event again in the sum mer months.

Thanks to Mr Davies and Mr and Mrs Peter Wood were given by organiser Mrs Thelma Clark.

The next meeting of the Wednesday Club will be an “At Home" hosted by Mrs Eileen Lambert. This event will take place on Wednesday at 8 p.m. There will be a cake and bring- and-buy stall, raffle and supper, and money raised will go towards a nominat ed charity.

rister had saved him. Barker was told by

Recorder Peter Rhodes that those who perverted the course of justice could usually expect to go to jail. Barker was given a combi

nation order of 80 hours of community service and 12 months on probation, after admitting two counts of acts intending to pervert the course of justice and two of driving while dis qualified. Mr Tony Cross (defend

ing) said Barker had been addicted to drugs and com mitted motoring offences. The defendant had realised the only place for him was with his parents and that if he had stayed with his criminal associates and car ried on abusing drugs his offending would increase. On the first occasion he

was stopped .by police, Barker had been taking an injured girl to hospital. Barker knew giving a false name had enabled him to escape arrest earlier in the day, so later he did the same again. Mr Cross said his client

was remorseful and knew he faced the very real dan ger of incarceration. He had pleaded guilty at the first opportunity.

Jazz session into action

Triumphant climax to season

THE Vanbrugh String

Quartet brought Clitheroe Concerts Society season to a triumphant climax.

The concert began with a fine interpretation of one of Mozart’s most moving quartets, that in D minor, with its lovely, contempla tive slow movement and unusual minuet and trio.

A gentle and subtle cha

conne by Purcell was fol lowed by a composition inspired by his “Fantasia on one note". Michael Berkeley’s “Magnetic Field”, an intriguing innov ative composition commis sioned by the Vanbrugh Quartet in 1995, began slowly wandering round the note F in an eerie fashion, building to an agitated cli max and subsiding quietly to its starting point.

The concert ended with a M m i

MUSIC from the Lancashire Stu dents’ Jazz Orchestra drew a full house to Clitheroe Civic Hall on Sat urday.

Over 250 jazz fans listened to the young musicians, who came from all over the county to help raise funds for the Rotary Club of Ribblesdale.

The youngsters, some barely 14

years old and still in the training orchestra, played with the confidence of adults. The crowd responded, call ing for an encore.

Mr John Pye, speaking on behalf of

the Rotary Club, said: “This is the second time the orchestra has played for us at the Civic Hall and, once again, it has been a great success.

Personally, I hope we will see the orchestra perform for us again.” All the money raised is in aid of the

Rotary charities and, in particular, Lancashire Schools Drugs Awareness Caravan. See our review on the Lifestyle page. Members of the orchestra are pic tured with Rotary members.
