Knives roll in for
amnesty
KNIVES have been handed in at Clitheroe Police station as part ox the nat i onwide amnesty following the iatal stabbing of Lion- tlon headmaster Philip Lawrence.

ety of knives in a black bin at the station. Howev e r, it is not
known how many have been handed in, because the bin has remained
sealed throughout the amnesty. The nationwide amnesty
allows anyone to hand over their knives without any questions being asked.

Rallying call from club goes out to local women
A RALLYING call to the creme de la creme of the Blackburn and Ribble Valley business world was addressed, not to an assembly of braces and loud ties, but to a room full of feminine poise and grooming. The appeal for support
in encouraging new mem
bers was made by the new president of the Business and Professional Women UK Ltd Blackburn Club in her incoming speech. Mellor businesswoman Mrs Lorraine Mullins
thanked her predecessor, Mrs Marjorie Downham,
for all the dedication and hard work put in over the past year and welcomed on board n ew ly -e le c ted officers. She a n n o u n c e d a recruitment drive for the
group, which meets on the second and fourth Mon days of each month and, following the closure of the Ribble Valley club, encom passes women from the Clitheroe area. Said Mrs Mullins: “This
organisation is all about encouraging women to ful fil their potential, giving them the confidence to participate in public life and decision-making and the ability to influence and educate. “ I look forward during
my term of office to help ing attract interest from business and professional women of all ages across the area and one of my first tasks will be to assist in forming a committee to plan our recruitment drive.” For more information,

Paintings in Naive style
AN exhibition of painting in the Naive style will adorn the walls of Clitheroe Library for a month and started on Monday.
The work belongs to a Clitheroe man, Mr Ray
mond Pickup, who is a student of art at Blackburn College.
Mr Pickup (48), a former resident of Calderstones
and Brockhall hospitals who has lived in Clitheroe for the past five years, has already exhibited his work at Trinity Youth and Community Centre.
The Platform Gallery is also considering exhibiting
his work, along with a group of other local artists, at a later date in the year.
