PART way through the sea son for the four Roefield Badminton Club teams,

there is a lot of work to do. In Division One of the Black

burn and District League, the A team is struggling. Hnving lost two or three key matches narrowly, they now find them selves bottom of the division and relegation looms again. In Division Three, the B team

are desperately fighting for a promotion slot in fourth posi tion, while the C team lie sixth in the Fourth Division, with progress having been ham pered by a player shortage. In Division Five, the D team

are fifth of seven. The teams could do with one

or two better players coming in at th e top to s tr en g th en throughout all the teams.

The A team in particular

aren’t quite strong enough to maintain their First Division status. If you are interested in play

ing, con ta ct Mary Bras s (01200 27543).

maintain their impressive home form, which has seen eight consecutive wins, and th a t the luck of the draw gives them the chance to progress in

the cup. Away form is a dif feren t m a t te r

though, and they will be aiming for their first away success in the league a t struggling Queens Park Rangers

on Saturday. Rangers have suffered from injuries

all season, with the likes of big target men Ma rk H a te ley and Dan ie l Dichio missing several games, while the summer signings of Ned Zelic, Simon Osbourne and Gregory Goodridge have all failed to come off for Ray Wilkins’ side. The form of Trevor Sinclair, the for

mer Blackpool forward who rejected Rovers to sign for Rangers, has been a shining light in a dismal season for the Londoners, and Saturday’s 2-0 FA Cup success a t Tranmere was only their third win in 14 games, with the side consisting of five players aged 23 or un d e r and one to u ch in g 40 - Wilkins himself. Not many sides would recover from

the loss of goals provided by big Les Ferdinand, b u t Rangers seem des tined for the drop. Add Rovers’ fine record a t Loftus

Road in th e P rem ie rship - thre e games, two wins, one defeat and only one goal conceded - and the signs are positive. B ut while Rovers look towards snatching a UEFA Cup slot in the

league, or indeed a Cup Winners’ Cup place if they triumph beneath the Twin Towers in May, Burnley’s season took a massive body blow on

Saturday. While most football fans’ thoughts

were of Wembley on Saturday, Bum- ley had the same dream, but in the Auto Windscreens Shield.

a rampant Carlisle United side, who had sewn up th e game before th e opening quarter of an hour. The Clarets didn’t seem to have the

heart on a raw day a t Brunton Park, and the home side, a t th e opposite end of the Second Division table to promotion-hunting Burnley, took full

advantage. F u l l b a ck D a r re n E dmondson

stabbed home the first after a cross from the outstanding Paul Murray, before Edmondson curled a superb 25-yarder beyond Marlon Beresford. The Clarets were forced to rethink

tactically, and dismantled a three- centre back system to th ru s t Peter Swan up front. But with the lack of width due to

David Eyres’ illness, and Paul Weller being forced to play very narrow in midfield, Burnley couldn’t create anything worthwhile. At th e oth e r end former Burnley

loan sta r David Reeves, sent off in the Cumbrians’ 2-0 reverse a t Turf Moor in e a r ly December, earned some semblance of revenge. He had a tremendous volley wiped

out for off-side, before he poked home a Murray cross on the half hour. Ted McMinn came on for Andy

Cooke a t the break, but within four minutes i t was 4-0 as David Currie released Reeves, who rifled home into the top comer. Reeves completed his hat-trick and

earned himself and his manager free curry for a year - two minutes from time when his header b e a t Marlon Beresford following Rory Delap’s knockback from a Tony Gallimore

comer. The fan s’ fu ry was again vented

towards the manager Jimmy Mullen. They aren’t happy with the release of Adrian Heath to Sheffield United - “Inchy” showing his class against Arsenal in the FA Cup - or midfielder Adrian Randall for £140,000 to York

City. And w ith a to u g h home game

against the Clarets’ old friends Stock- port County on Saturday with the Hatters fresh from a superb 2-2 draw a t Everton on Sunday - the clamour for Mr Mullen’s head could mount if Burnley slip behind in an ever-tighter battle for promotion. Burnley took a point from Edgeley

Park in August in a 0-0 draw the first time th e sides h ad m e t since th e Clarets’ successful Second Division play-off final appearance against the Hatters in May 1994.

County have climbed back into the

play-off frame with the goals of Alim Armstrong and Ian Helliwell, and the wing play of loan man Ben Thomley, borrowed from neighbours Manches ter United.

With Burnley’s home form disap

p o in t in g of la te , an d th e r iv a l ry between the sides, the Clarets will be hoping to please their discontented supporters.
