Brisk walk starts the New Year
THE New Year got off to a flying start for Clitheroe Ramblers with a walk led by Mrs Pat Parrott. The party set off from
Burhoime Bridge and walked to Whitewell and
Crimpton, before taking a
concessionary path to Crag Stones, where the mist lifted and pale sun
shine allowed a glimpse of the view from the summit. The party then joined
the public footpath to Blue Gates, Farrowfield and Knowlmere Track, before walking through Lower Thorneyholme and back to the starting point. Thanks were expressed
to Knowlmere Estate and Lancashire County Coun cil for the use of conces
sionary footpaths, which have proved a valuable
addition to the footpath network. The group’s Sunday
walk, also led by Mrs Par rott, started from Payth- orne and went northwards to Wigglesworth Hall Farm via Halton West. They returned via field
paths to Hammerton Deer Farm, through Stubbs, Dunhazels and Moss Side Farms, re-entering Lanca shire at Higher Agden. The w a lk e r s then
cros sed Hyles Moor, before the Tewitt Hall Farm track led them to Intake Lane and back to Paythorne. The group’s next walk,
to Nicky Nook and Calder Vale, is on January 20th, leaving Waterloo car park at 9-30 a. m.
Thieves strike
THIEVES stole a trailer after unhitching it from a van parked off Moor Lane, Clitheroe, between Sun day night and Monday morning. The maroon Glide-Along
trailer, valued at £500, was 8ft. by 4ft. and had the r e g . N o . J201
MCW.They also stole a black welder on wheels, valued at £2,000, and a box of bolts, valued at £50.
THE sudden death of a retired senior bridge superintendent from Clitheroe has left his family and friends bereft of a person with a warm heart and a sense of fun. Mr Derrick Kay
(67), o f Balmoral Avenue, died suddenly on December 30th while holidaying with his wife, Doreen, in Spain. Described by his daugh
ter, Diane, as a man who loved to have fun, Mr Kay’s death also deprives five grandchildren of a wonderful grandfather.
A big jolly man, who
often stood in for the over worked Father Christmas at St Paul’s Church Sun day school, he had a great love of children in general, and his family are asking that any donations be made to the Children's Society. After marrying Doreen
in 1950, the couple had four children — Linda, Diane, Jonathan and Nicholas — who are all married. Mr Kay worked for Lancashire County Coun
cil from the day he left Ribblesdale Secondary School to the day he retired in 1988, starting as an apprentice stonemason and finishing as a senior bridge superintendent.
He will be well-remem
bered by the many who knew him for his sporting connections.
He played football for
Chatbum FC and, in his later life, followed Clith eroe FC and Ribblesdale Wanderers CC, as well as enjoying crown green

CLITHEROE St John Ambulanceman Mr Harold Howarth has received one of the highest awards the organisation has to offer.
In recognition of his
service over 44 years he was made a Serving Brother of the Order of St John at a ceremony at St John Gate in Lon don. He received the medal from the Grand
Prior, who is second only to Her Majesty the
Queen in the order’s officers. Mr Howarth, who is
the caretaker of Bow- land County High School, is only the third member of the Clith eroe St John Ambu lance Brigade to receive the award in the last 50 years.
Our picture shows Mr
Howarth with cadets who made a presenta tion to him when he visited them to describe the award ceremony.
IF you dream of lazy afternoons and fun-packed nights, then pack up the suntan lotion and head for Spain.

bv a judge that the status of the national currency
must be maintained. Judge Brian Duckworth
stressed that the public should know that those who intended to launder forged notes back into cir culation were imperilling the country’s currency.
Close, Clitheroe, had admitted having custody or control of 13 Bank of England notes, custody of counterfeit notes and delivering counterfeit notes with intent, when he appeared before Burnley Crown Court.
Bialecki (26), of Whittle
Mr Robert Crawford (prosecuting) said the
offences came to li^ht when the defendant’s girl friend paid their rent in cash. Two of the £20 notes turned out to be count erfeit and, on searching Bialecki’s home, police found a further 13 fake notes. He claimed he got the notes in a car deal.
Mr Roger Baldwin, for
Bialecki, described the defendant as a hard-work ing man, normally honest and extremely unlucky to find himself in court.
To supplement the
family income, Bialecki had done cars up and sold
one for £2,500 to a “Rasta farian with a Liverpool accent”.
Of the cash deal, £300 was in fake £20 notes. Bia
lecki was going to lose out on the £300 and, in order not to do so, recirculated them in society.
Mr B a ldw in sa id : “Although it is a crime to
).ass o.n notes in that situa- ion, it is perhaps one of the least serious situations
of somebody passing on counterfeit notes.” He added: “He was the
victim himself of a crime and fell to temptation to try and not lose out. The offences were completely out of character for this defendant and there is no reason to believe that he ivill ever contravene the law again.”

told a meeting of the Rib-

sidering the controversial proposal by the QEII Playing Fields Committee to divert a footpath that
cuts across the site. The meeting heard that
pathising with the two organisations, Coun. Hol gate said the health and safety of the public was of paramount importance. The committee agreed
the matter should be resolved by negotiation b e tw e en the p a r t ie s concerned.
