Artists to stage Easter exhibition

SOME 30 artists from various parts of Brit ain, who have come to live and work in the Ribble Valley as part o f an innovativ e scheme at Brockhall Village, are to stage an exhibition at Easter.

The scheme is part of

the ambitious redevelop ment plan for the former hospital and is aimed at giving the artists a chance to launch themselves on a commercial basis and to enhance the aesthetic a s p e c t s

selves into the Brockhall Arts’ Institute and live in

Awards for child care

THREE Clitheroe child care workers have gained further qualifications through an East Lanca shire Training and Enter prise Council (E LTEC) programme.

Pino Pozzi, Lisa Aller- ton and Claire Howarth

were among 15 Lancashire childcare workers to

receive their Playwork Foundation Course certifi cates from ELTEC Chief Executive Mr Mark Price.

As part of its Out-of-

School Childcare pro gramme, ELTEC spon sored the 15 trainees on the course, which is offered bv the national Kids Club Network organ- is a t ion and lay s the groundwork for National Vocational Qualification Level 2 in Playwork.

a converted nurses’ hostel. Their work embraces a wide variety of fine art, from ceramics to sculpture installations, involving the aesthetic uses o f space both inside and outside buildings. The artists, who use the

former hospital laundry room as a workshop, will be demonstrating their skill to visitors to the exhi bition, which will be in progress from Good Fri day to Easter Monday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The scheme is part of

B ro ckh a l l d e v e lo p e r Gerald Hitman’s vision of creating a diverse village community on the site and forms part of the planning authority’s light industry r e qu irem en t fo r the

overall project. “ We arrived here in

November and most mem bers o f the group are under 25,” said Mr Reuben Reuten. “We are hopir members of the public wifi come to view our work and g e t some idea o f our I operation, which is quite

an innovative idea and gives us the freedom to

concentrate on our work.” Some of Mr Reuten s

ceramic sculptures and work by other artists from the colony have already been on exhibition at the Station Platform Gallery, in Clitheroe. Mr Reuten impressed many visitors to that exhibition with an imaginative and finely work ceramic T -sh ir t sculpture.

Ramblers head for West Pennines

THE local train service helped 20 Clitheroe Ram blers break new ground when they travelled to Brom ley Cross for an observer walk in the Turton and Eiitwistle area of the West Pennines. From Bromley Cross, they followed the Bradshaw

Brook to the Jumbles Reservoir Country Park, where a Countryside Ranger gave them a brief outline of the ecology (if the three reservoirs to be visited and birds to be observed. The group, led by Mr Norman Thorpe, then walked

along the edge of the Jumbles to Turton Bottoms, not ing the relics of the dyeing, bleaching and calico print ing industry, which used to occupy the valley. Crossing the medieval packhorse bridge and not

ing the "new" bridge, which replaced it in 11)75, they followed the old track up the 1ml to Chapeltown. Here they admired the 18th century houses, old grammar school, village inn, stocks and market cross. After following the path to Entwistle alongside Wayoh Reservoir, they looked at the historic Entwistle

Hall and New Hall and finally walked round Entwistle Reservoir, with its pinewoods and attractive views of

open moorland. In complete contrast to this walk, a group will be

visiting the northern Rowland Fells over North West Water Access land on Sunday. The walk links the Bow- land Knotts road, Cross of Greet road and Salter Fell road, passing White Hill — the third highest fell m Howland. The walk, led by group chairman Mr John White-

head, is only 10 miles, but strong waterproof foot wear is essential. Non-members are most welcome to try this new route. Unfortunately, dogs are not invited. Walkers should meet at Waterloo ear park at 10

a.m. or Mcrribent cattle grid (GR70!)5(i9) at 10-30 a.m. Further details are available from Mr White- head on Clitheroe 23881.

Still in recession but it’s open for business

WHILE the recession blues are still being felt throughout the region, there are new shops continuing to hang up their “ open for business” signs in

Clitheroe. Despite several shops

permanently closing their doors in the town over the last few months, Clitheroe is attracting businesses from inside and outside the Ribble Valley. One Blackburn busi

nessman and his wife are so convinced about the

merits of the town that they are both opening new businesses in the town shortly after Easter. Businessman Mr Alan Crosbie has snapped up a

vacant unit in Castle Street for his photographic shop, Clitheroe Photo Centre, while his wife, Clarice, is opening a deli- c a t e s s e n in Sw a n Courtyard. Mr Crosbie, who has

been in the photographic business for 30 years, said

they felt there was a mar ket for the businesses in

the town and were looking

Concert is cancelled

SU N D A Y ’S concert at Clitheroe Civic Hall, fea turing guitarist Denny Laine, has been cancelled because of lack of interest, says o rg a n is e r John Sweetmore. He eommented: "W e

have had only one booking for the concert and cannot afford to take a gamble. We lost money on the Bay C ity R ol le rs and the Sweet, and just cannot afford any more losses. “ It is very sad, because

the concerts have been thoroughly enjoyed by all who have attended but, at the end of the day, we have to be realistic. We are still hoping, however, to stage a concert featur ing Wayne Fontana and th e M in d b en d e rs in November.”

' Denny Laine, a former

member o f the Moody Blues and Wings, co-wrote

chart-topper “Mull of Kin- t y r e ’ ' w i t h P a u l McCartney.

With Wings, he enjoyed

upwards o f 30 chart entries, among them "Jet” and “Band on the Run.”

forward to working in

Clitheroe. Before deciding to start

the business, Mr Crosbie had been taking a break

from the photographic trade, but he still believed there were still opportuni ties available for him. “ I suppose that I still

feel I have a lot to offer,” he said. “ I have always

liked Clitheroe and I am looking forward to setting

up in the town.” Mr Crosbie added that

they would be taking on local people to work in the

shops. In Moor Lane, Mrs

Kimberley Walmsley is taking over the premises,

formerly used by W. B. Dale and Sons Ltd, for her craft shop.

Mrs Walmsley, of Chth- . _....

eroe, believes the busi ness, which will specialise

in selling rare fabric and j e w e l l e r y -m a k i n g material, has potential in the town. She said: “ I think that

the people are c ra f t minded, judging by the

number of craft exhibi tions in the library, and I am craft minded, so it

*y > seemed natural to open

the shop.” The shop will be called

“Aunt Jemimah’s” and is named after Mrs Walms-

ley’s 11-year-old daughter. When the “Advertiser

and Times” approached the Moor Lane shop’s for mer proprietor to discover the reason for the paint and wallpaper business’s closure, he refused to comment.

E ls ew h e re in Moor

Lane, three other shops still remain vacant, but it

is b e l iev ed one may shortly be occupied.

Also in the town, Book-

sale, the discount book shop in Market Place, closed its doors for the final time two weeks ago.

Clitheroe Chamber of

T rad e p res id ent Mrs Judith Hitchen welcomed the new shops to the town, saying it was a good sign

for Clitheroe’s businesses. She added that it was,

unfortunate some town centre shops had closed, but this was not uncom mon in a market town such as Clitheroe.
