A LARGE number of rela tives and friends paid their final respects yesterday to Mrs Lily Lord, of Castle- gate, Clitheroe, a member of a long-established local business family, who died at the age of 86.

Good result for chessmen against Great Harwood
MEMBERS of Clitheroe Chess Club’s B team achieved a good result when they faced the Great
Harwood C team at an away fixture. The first game to finish was on board four, where
Phillip Radcliffe won in only eight moves when his
opponent fell into a well-known trap in the opening. On the top board, Brian Carr, after successfully
negotiating the opening, attempted an attack that proved premature, meaning he had to play extremely
accurately to gain a draw. Board two player Brendan Brown added to his
fine season with a draw and after the match everyone agreed that no noticeable advantage could have been
obtained by either player. Acting captain Peter Ryan, on board five, gained a

Vsllcy.Devised by Mr Eddie Ross, of Clithcroe Ramblers’ Association, the walk starts in Clitheroe and goes over Longridge Fell to Newton, then skirts Grindleton Fell and crosses Pcndle Hill before returning to
Clitheroe. A walk of 60km was chosen to act

as a permanent reminder to The Ramblers’ 60th annivesary, which is

of the shop during the second world war, when her husband was serving with the Royal Air Force. She and her husband lived in a flat above the shop from the start of their marriage until Mr Lord’s early retirement at the age of 55. He died six
years ago, aged 81. On their retirement, when
their elder son, Bernard, took over the business, they moved to a cottage in Castlegate, situated only 25 yards from the shop^. Their granddaughers, Mrs Hath Pollard and Mrs Sue Ramsingh, also work in the business.

Lord was bom in Barrow, at her grandmother’s home, although
her parents, Mr and Mrs Jack Hargreaves, lived in Turner Street, Clitheroe, at the time. She attended St James’s CE
School and lived in Whalley Road during her youth. Throughout her adult life, she
was a keen charity worker, help ing at the Sue Ryder Shop, in Clitheroe, and at the charity s coffee mornings. She was also a member of local Inner Wheel Clubs and the Marie Curie Can
cer Care charity. Mrs Lord was a keen gardener
and spent many happy tiours in
her own garden behind her cot tage in Castlegate. For many years, she brightened up Castle gate with flower boxes, admired by passers-by. Mrs Lord moved to Beech
Grove Residential Home, Low Moor, a few months ago and died suddenly after collapsing in the corridor at the home. Three days earlier she had attended a large family gathering on Mother’s Day at Mr Bernard Lord’s home in Peel Park Close, Clitheroe. As well as Bernard, Mrs Lord
