problems involve illness or bodily discomfort, but can still result in anxiety and tension. Advice centres exist to help with personal problems, first of all by listening, secondly by ottering practical suggestions to resolve the problem.
Advice Many advice centres
are staffed by volunteers, but they are fully trained to deal with callers. Counselling can assist in the more complex problems, but in many cases, a helpful suggestion or a referral to the right department in a town hall can provide an instant solution. Some of the best
known advice bureaux are The Samaritans and the Citizen's Advice Bureau. But there are many more, often dealing with specific problems. For example, the Racial Equality Council acts to solve problems between indigenous and immigrant communities. Mainly, the bureaux
will point you in the right direction and you then take action on their advice. But the town’s Member of Parliament holds regular advice surgeries and will actually follow up any action needed. Whether it be an
approach to a Government or town hall
department, or dealing with a local service such as the police, water authority, gas board or electricity company, your local MP will take the lead himself and contact the relevant person on your behalf.
In these bureaux,
advice is usually free to the user. Finance comes from a variety of sources such as charities, fund-raising efforts and local government grants.
