New device will help fire safety


THE deaf and hard of hearing in the Ribble Val­ ley can now make emer­ gency calls to the fire bri­ gade — thanks to a revolutionary telephone


device. The device, known as


Minicom,” is available


with a freephone 0800 number, which has been issued to users throughout the county by the Lanca­ shire Fire Service. When a call is received


in the brigade’s control room, at Fulwood, a pre­ programmed message is used to speed up the transmission to the caller. The message reads:


“ Fire Service; what is your telephone number and the address of the
