■FORD’S 1.8-litre Fiesta LX diesel is a small car with a big engine, offering petrol-fired performance with the economy of diesel. The Fiesta may not have the low


range pick-up of its petrol-powered brethren, but with its torque power unit, it can compete with the best once it gets rolling. For the newcomer to diesels, the


Fiesta may feel a little alien a t first, but once acquainted with the engine’s power delivery, the Fiesta becomes a delight to drive, especially when the •12-litre fuel tank is still half full after 150 miles of hard driving. For this test, to evaluate the ear’s


performance under as varied condi­ tions as possible, I took the Fiesta up to the Lake District via the MG, A- roads and some sinuous H-roads over the Kirkstonc Pass. The Ford aquitted itself well on the


A-roads, having enough power to overtake HGVs and other dawdlers on the A59, but it was on the motor­ way th at the Fiesta really shone. After accelerating to a reasonable


cruising speed the car felt as though it would sit there all day. Engine and wind noise a re m in im al and th e Fiesta is as steady as a rock. Ford’s diesel flyer ate up the 40 motorway miles in well under half an hour, but


the fuel needle didn’t seem to have budged.
