LOGIC seems to be in short supply in the world of Westmin ster at the moment. Announcements con cerning British Rail fares, the mines and the economy in gen eral leave one won- d e r in g w h a t is happening.
MOST railway platform announcements are gar bled, ye; the one we all dearly heard las; week was extremely garbled. B r i t i s h R a i l l ia s announced that, due to the decrease in the num ber of nassengers using the railways, the fares will rise at double the rate of inflation.

The only question that arises from this rather stupid decision is that when the number of pas- s e n g e r s f a r t i i e r declines, due to higher prices, does this mean th a t pr ice s will r ise again to offset lower revenues?
I would have thought that low e r f a r e s w o u 1 d attract extra customers, who would also spend money at the stations and on the trains. So come on, BR, get those prices down and let the trains take the strain, not our wallets!

surprised me, consid ering the uncouth man n e r in which it was done.
I used my influence on the chairman of the 1922 Backbench Committee to asl: Michael Heseltine to th in k again. I am delighted that his deci sion on Monday goes a long way towards that.
I hope th at a common- s e n s e l o n g - t e rm approach will now fol low, which looks a t th in g s such as coal imports, dole payments and the possibility of s u p p la n t in g s u n s e t industries with sunrise industries.
THE last announcement which has impacted on Westminster gossip was the announcement that Britain was to leave the Exchange Rate Mecha nism. I am delighted! It did seem absurd, given the fact that Germany has different problems due to its reunification than Britain has, that we were shadowing its
currency ana its interest ’ ’t i le s !
Since leaving th a t eco nomic straight.iacket we can now have interest rates which reflect Brit a in ’s needs and th at means lower in te re s t rates.
T h is now m ean s th a t mortgage payments wiil go down and that wiil mean more money in people's pockets, which may well now lead to more house
s.aies. but c ertainly more re ta il sales in our villages and high streets.
As inflation falls further. 1 hope that this will mean more interest rate cuts. At last we are confident that our economic poli cies are not to be side tracked by influences outside our control.
ONE issue on which I am waiting for an announce ment is the future of the European Fighter Air c r a f t . I t does seem strange logic indeed for our German friends to sav that they are looking

SCHOOLDAYS arc rarely as good as when they arc being remembered.
For members and guests attending Clitheroc
Royal Grammar School's Old Girls' Association annual reunion dinner, whether that was the case or not, schooldays certainly provided a great deal to talk about.
dington, and guest speaker was former pupil Miss Wendy Walker, who has become the county’s first woman detective inspector, stationed at Blackburn divisional police headquarters.
The dinner was held at the Moorcock Inn. Wad- Miss Walker told the S()-strong gathering how
she had progressed through the police force and recalled her days on the beat in Blackpool, going into the traffic division and then CID. A pupil of the school between 1971 and 197S,
she was able to exchange classroom memories with many of her contemporaries attending the dinner. P re s id en t Mrs C a th e r in e T aylor welcomed
everyone, including head teacher Mr Stuart Holt and his wife, head girl .lane Hargreaves and head hoy James Cunliffe. Pictured are some of the gathering with Miss Walker (front, right).
