opening its doors to the Kihblcsdaie Cement, was public in a unique venture to give the people of Clith- eroe and district an oppor­ tunity to see what goes on behind the gates leading to the West Bradford Road site. 'The cement works is one


of the oldest-established manufacturers in the area. Due to the availability of


local limestone and coal from Burnley, it was built on the site of the old Isis cement factory. During the early years,


the company employed a workforce that could be counted in tens. Today the figure totals hundreds — more than dot) people now work there. O v e r 50 y e a r s th e


cement works has under­ gone a number of owner­ ship and company name changes.

that, with the increase in indust rialisation and the not insignificant damage done during the war, that this was not the case. A second kiln was built


to double the output and a fu r th e r f iv e k iln s have since been added, the last one producing cement at more than 100 tonnes an hour. 'The cur rent output of


over 1.2m. tonnes makes the Clitheroe production centre one of the largest and most important works in the country, supplying about one te n th of the cement used in the UK. Changes in the skyline m a rk C a s t le C em e n t ’s


advances. 'The two original chimneys were knocked down when the first kilns w e r e s c r a p p e d . S i n c e th e n , th e re has been a fluctuating combination of one. two and three chim­ neys — c u r re n t ly the re are only two , the th ird having been demolished during the past 12 months. tion and d e l iv e ry have changed drastically over 50 years. Cement was or iginally


delivered in lOOcwt hes­ sian sacks which w e re hand-filled and manually loaded. T o d a y , modern a u to ­


mated equipment fills the 50kg bags and stacks them on wooden pallets, which are then loaded by forklift on to the lorries. B u lk d e l iv e r ie s have


changed too. 'The first sup­ plies were in box-wagons covered by tarpaulin. Dur­ ing the last war, cement was delivered in dustbins and now, in 1000, modern pressurised bulk tankers are used. Challenges have been


met, from the production of new cements to cater for modern construction to improved performance in p ro d u c t io n , technology a n d e n v i r o u m e n t a I control. Competition with other


UK producers and foreign imports has been intense, but Castle Cement is still le a d in g th e w a y and employees at the Clitheroe site hope the outlook will remain bright as it heads to w a rd s a c e n tu r y trading.
