especially delighted to see Jaimie because her p a r ents had been trying for 12 years to have children and had had so many tests and problems. When they gave up in despair, along came Jaimie!” R o y , who t ra in e d in

jo in e r y business fo r a month to take his mother and s ister on wonderful sightseeing tr ip s in his vintage 1920s Dodge car. Said Mrs Brown: “We
saw many beautiful things, but perhaps the most spe cial w e re two snow-co vered volcanic mountains in th e c e n t r e o f th e island." Mrs Brown, whose hus
band H a iry died 10 years ago, was born in B r ie r - field, and can remember

grocery shop, before set t in g o f f to w o rk as t weaver at the age of 12. A f te r th e ir m ar r iage
the couple emigrated to New Zealand. But there was no work in the days of the depression and they returned home a year later to live in Burnley. They moved to Wiswell in 1932, where they ran a poultry business. M rs B ro w n r e c a l ls
washing eggs and cleaning out GOO hens. “That was a large number of hens in those days,” she added. She moved from Wis
well to Whalley 2-1 years ago and has a n o th e r d a u g h te r , M is s D o r is B row n , who live s w i th her. I t was M rs B row n 's
second visit to New Zea land to see Roy. The last was 17 years ago. But it won’t be long before she sees her son again. Roy and Ruth plan to come to Eng lan d on a s ix -w e e k holiday for her birth da y celebrations in November.

CLITHEROE Library opened its doors to the public for the first time on Monday morn ing- . . . and visitors liked what they saw.
