Sunshine brings out the wasps!
WASPS’ nests are creating havoc in tile Kibble Valley.
The pest control office at the Kihhlc Valley
Council is inundated with calls and cannot meet the demand. On one day alone, pest control officer M r Les Billion can receive as many as 20 calls to attend nests, which have been found not only under eaves and bird boxes, but also in a Itiming- lon post-box and a golf Img! The number of reports is already up oil last year
and senior officer Air David Newton blames the mild winters and recent good weather for the cur rent outbreak. Whilst lie urges the public to leave well alone if
the wasps are doing no harm, the pest control olliee will deal with a nest for the small charge of 11.50 (a bargain compared with Blackburn's rate of
• t i l l ) . A lte rn a t iv e ly , a wasp aerosol de ftly aimed
should do the trick! The time for attack is during the evening, rather than the (laytime, when the wasps are most active. A wary approach is advis able, as even the professionals can lie caught out — Mr Bulloii recently had a nasty sting on the eye. despite his protective clothing.
Cheers as marathon pays for chairs
IF you go down in the woods today . . . you might just hump into 2<i little Maddingtons from Waddinglon and West Bradford CE School. The entire reception
middle infant department decided to go on a teddy bear’s picnic and were accompanied by deputy head Mrs Susan Tcalc, nursery nurse Mrs Maureen Lonsdale, five mothers and one grandfather. The hears — who had
made their own masks and cardboard teddy friends to lake with them — decided they would also make their own food. Said Mrs Teale: “The
concensus of opinion was that bears would eat syrup sandwiches . . . but we thought that would be a rather sticky problem to deal with! Instead wc opted for cheese, ham, egg or jam . . . and the children made their own cakes at school, too.” The outing started
with a swimming session in the learner pool at Clitheroe’s swimming baths, followed hy a picnic outside on (he grass. The rest of the afternoon was spent in a treasure hunt and games in the sunshine.
