quickly mastering the tech niques and hope soon to head towards water, accom panied undoubtedly by their security shadow.

bies. Now her children are older — only Victoria remains at home when not attending boarding school in the Lake District — she divides her time between Sabden and an Edwardian terraced in South London.

3UALITY CLOTHING FOR MEN

Christmas is just around the corner. . .

. . . and we at Esquire house Due to her husband’s pro

motion, they are shortly to move from that house to another more suited to his new role.

An untiring worker for

charity, her interest in mental illness resulted in an active involvement in SANE, the schizophrenia charity. She enjoys cooking, entertaining, does much of her own decorating, is a competent needlewoman making her own curtains among other things, and is currently working on a large and intricate tapestry rug — parts of which disap pear back to London with her on Sunday afternoons. She also relishes work in

the four and a half-acres of garden which surround their home and adds: “ Da v id’ s a v e ry good labourer.” Both husband and wife

are interested in art and their home features a large collection of pictures, origi

nals, prints and photo graphs in varying styles. After leaving boarding

school in Eastbourne, Gil lian spent-a year at art school before her marriage to David.

David recalls their first

Christmas as man and wife with mixed emotions. “We went to the Nick O’ Pendle so that Gilly could paint. It was rea l ly cold and I remember thinking this is a rum do, marriage. We cer tainly never forgot that outing.”

Holidays are invariably

spent in a rented property in Salcombe. They present another opportunity for the family to meet and spend time together and for David to put to water in his Mirror dinghy. “We had about 10 years in

Devon and then, the family having left, spent three years abroad because of the bad weather. We had some very nice holidays, but it’s back to Devon again now,” says David. “ I t ’s a real family affair and we enjoy

that.” Victoria obviously loves

her home in Sabden sur rounded by mum, dad, grandparents and relatives and the family pet Basil, unkindly referred to as “an ankle biter” in a recent national newspaper article.

Basil, who the Wadding-

tons admit has taken to the police in “ a big way,” accompanies Gillian on her frequent journeys back and forth to London, settling without complaint into his dog basket for the duration of the journey by train. Victoria hopes to embark

on a career in drama and says she would love to join the Nati on al Youth Theatre. She is, however, of her"

mother’s mould and is determined to do it her own way stating categorically: “I e x p e c t no s p e c i a l treatment.” Victoria’s statement sums

up this remarkable local family’s outlook. We at East Lancashire Newspapers wish them well. □
