The scenes on the pitch as the match ends Burnley 2 Orient 1 and Clarets

leagtie place is safe Dining Outlook

IF you prefer to eat out somewhere relaxed and informal, somewhere you don’t have to don collar and tie to dine, and where there’s no Maitre d’Hote who specialises in making you feel small, then Scup pers Restaurant in Cowling might be the place for you.

I t ’s an eaterie with an

essentially nautical, pirati cal theme situated on the main road through Cowling, best reached by travelling through Colne and Lane- shaw Bridge — then follow ing your nose.

I ate there one Saturday

night when what would have been cosy during the week turned out to be rather crowded. The open plan arrange

ment of the small, but very busy, wine bar and restau rant might not suit those looking for an intimate and romantic dinner, but I personally enjoyed the lively atmosphere.

At weekends though it’s

perhaps best suited to the under 40’s, or those who are young at heart and enjoy popular music. Service was excellent, the

food was first class and plentiful, and there was a good selection of wines. What’s more i f you are

bored with your dinner partners, or stuck for con versation, then you can busy yourself reading the witty one liners, chalked up on the walls around you. Funnies like: “ Tolkien

could be Hobbit forming” . “Apathy Ru...” . Or how

about “Men call us birds — Is that because we pick up worms”.

My only complaint is that

the tables were too close together.

There was a choice of

seven starters. We went for the favourite garlic mush rooms (£1-95).

We w e re d e f in i te ly

spoiled for choice when it came to the main course — 12 dishes featuring meat or fish and another three purely vegetarian dishes.

I plumped for scampi

provencale — delicious, melt in the mouth scampi in sauce with vegetables and brown rice (£5-75), while my partner had seafood hotpot (£6-55).

There was a choice of

seven sweets and no sign of the predictable gateaux. We’d recommend the rasp berry dream (£2-55). SHARON DALE
