Sunday trading detrimental to society’
RESIDENTS of the Ribble Valley have been urged to contact MP Mr David Waddington asking him not to support the Sunday Trading
Bill. The call came from a Among those against
“Keep Sunday meeting Kofm-o fhn Rill Special” in Clitheroe,
when it was stressed that action needed to be taken be ore the Bil
sed in Parliament in the
near future. The R e c to r o f St
James’s, Clitheroe, the
P U P IL S a t Pen d ie County Primary School conjured up an impressive l in e -u p o f w i t c h e s , wizards, ghosts and skele tons for a Hallow-e'en
party. Hut when it came to
awarding first prize in the
fancy-dress competition, teachers picked Wendy Hailwood, disguised as a pumpkin, for her original costume.
Second prize was won
jointly by Matthew Day (wizard) and Holly Wad
dington (skeleton). The p a r ty , held on
Friday for second and third-year classes, was or ganised by Mrs Liz Wad dington and Mrs Jean Brennan.
A h ig h l ig h t was
poetry reading by Mrs Waddington. during which the children provided the sound effects in keeping with the H a llow -e'en theme.
Trinity's champs
FOR the third year succession Trinity Guides have won the movement’s Lancashire East Division netball championship.

Clitheroe team beat Burnley side 7-3 at the tournament at Moorhead
School, Accrington. The w in n e r ’ s s h ie ld and
medals were presented by Mrs A. Boardman, county commissioner.
In the team were Joanne Sowcrby, Pauline
Wrigley, Karen McGurk, M e 1 a n i e Wh it t a k e r . Eleanor Sowerby, Beth Hudson, Caroline Temple- man, Alison Hailwood and Catherine Needham.
Rev. David Woodhouse, a co-ordinator in the Ribble Valley of the national campaign, felt that people might consider Sunday trading convenient, with out realising the full im plications.
Research had shown, he
said, that more money would not become avail able, costs for labour and overheads would rise with the subsequent increase in prices and many small shops would be driven out of business by the higher costs, resulting in the loss of thousands of jobs.
Another campaign co ordinator, Mrs Muriel
Butlin, of Lancaster Drive, Clitheroe, said that the removal of restrictions
would mean the loss of Sunday as a special day for worship, relaxation, family and friends. Sunday trading, she
said, was designed to fill the coffers of the already rich. Those requesting it
were mainly a small number of large shops be lieving they could thereby substantially increase
sales. is discus- discus
the Bill were workers’
the Union, Shop- the Co-
operative Movement and 83% of private retailers.
If the Bill was intro-
duced, it would be dis crimination against the Christian Church, she said. “ It would also be detri
mental to society and a monumental act of vandal ism, bulldozing the found ations of our nation,” she added. Among those opposing
the Bill were two loca. councillors, Clitheroe Mayor Coun. Howel Jones and Coun. Eric Bracewell, both speaking in a private capacity. Coun. Jones, said it was
part of the country’s heritage to have Sundays free. I f the Bill was passed, some people would be compelled to
work. Coun. Bracewell felt that something positive
was needed to replace the present nonsensical Shops Act.

A TALK on the Jewish way of life was given to members of the Soroptim- ist International Club of Clitheroe by Mrs Homer of Accrington. Mrs Mar garet Garnett thanked the speaker. The raffle was won bv Mrs Hosker.
