‘very much alive’
FALSE rumours that the cully-formed Pendle
1'lavgroup is on the brink of closure have angered the su p e r v is o r Mrs
Elizabeth Trotter. Her message to the misinformed is that the
p la y g rou p , based at Clitheroe Cricket Club. Chathurn Koad, is defi nitely alive and well and danger at all of
folding. The scheme was
launched three months ago. providing three
morning sessions a week for children of pre-school age.
At present there are :i few vacancies, but Mr?
Tmtter. of Salt hill Road. Clitheroe. expects them to be snapped up after tin ( 'hristmas holidays. She said that the play
group had the full support of a "grand bunch of mums” anil she and her sistant were very
pleased with the way things were going. "I hope that the per:
r e sp o n s ib le fo r t rumours will now start passing on the correct in formation." she added.
NFIJ amalgamation THE Lancashire NEl
secretary Mr Ern Parker is to be regional executive officer of tin newly amalgamated I.an eashire and Cheshire NEC branch. The new n gional headquarters be in the Havdock because of its proximity to the motorway system The amalgamation take effect in March.

An excellent site for new library

THERE has been much correspondence regarding the proposed plans for the new Civic Suite, especial ly concerning the possible demolition of Mytton House and/or the altera tion to the outward ap- pearancc of the surround

night and continues until
Saturday. Doreen Grimshaw, as
the wheelchair-bound Helen, gives a first-class performance of great power and sensitivity in the I ,iz Colon production. Doreen (right) domi

lias been the future vaca tion of the Auction Mart buildings, part of which are likely to be pulled down to provide further car parking space. Addi- tionallv to this it is to be liopcd' that we will soon
have a Citir.ens’ Advice Bureau within Clitheroe. With a little thought
these three, though at
first glance seeming sepa ra te d . could all be brought together as com ponents of one larger
scheme. Starting with the Auc
tion Mart buildings, these could provide excellent facilities for a new library — especially as there is a large ear park handy; they are in an ideal posi tion close to the open market and with the ground level entrance to the buildings would pro vide easy access for the disabled. Having relocated the
library within the Auction Mart.’ the council cham bers could be extended to utilise all of the Moot Hall promises, restoring these
It’s time this problem was sorted out
LEGEND has it that Dick Whittington was lured to London in the belief that the streets
were paved with gold. Hitter disillusion fol- lowed, the story goes,
when his feet trod the humble stones instead of precious metal. Vet Dick and his cat
are to be envied by many shoppers and visitors to Clitheroe who. willing to settle for naked stones under their feet, find, to their disgust and discomfi ture. that the streets of Clitheroe are paved with dog excrement. Since it is unreasonable
to fault the animals, the problem should he laid at the doors of the irrespons ible owners who show contempt for the ineffec tual measures which the council has taken to outlaw this vexation.
I When confronted with a persistent animal nuisance (albeit of a different sort) the people of Hainolin-on Weser demanded of its corporation, in the word: of Robert Hrowning. that they: Roiisr up. Sirs! Girc pour brains <t racking.

to something like their former grandeur and im
portance. The Citizens’ Advice
Bureau could be located within Mytton House and. therefore, saving the
building from the threat of alteration or demolition — thus not only retaining the character of the area but also improving it at
the same time. There would obviously
unfortunately be some in convenience for a few years while work wa: completed but future gen orations would thank the forward thinking council for saving the attractive ness of the town. So the inconvenience would be
well repaid. Financially the utilisa
tion to their full extent of the buildings mentioned should prove less of a burden on Ribble Valley ratepayers than the pre sent council plans. Of course, what is
needed is a little thought and the conviction to
carry out decisions. Thi; may mean some new facer on the borough council as certain members seem to be a little short of new ideas. After all there are those who only see the auction mart site
