Proos goals earn Clitheroe a draw at the seaside

Blackpool Mechanics 2, Clitheroe 2 TWO goals by striker David Proos earned Clitheroe a point

them in touch with the league leaders, in cluding Mechanics, yet the Shawbridge team could easily have re- turned wi th both points but for some strange refereeing de

and Tudisco and Telese began to dominate mid- field for the villagers. However, Cononley

fought back and took the lead just before half-time. But as the second half

got under way it seemed that the home team were content to sit on their one-goal lead. Waddington pounded

the opposition with a wave of a attacks before Coulston hit a fine drive into the net for the equal iser. The match was spon

sored by Skipton Building Society.

Simonstone Whatley merger

WITH a fair chance of their village becoming part of the Kibble Valley local authority Simonstone Rangers have taken time by the forelock and become affiliated with Whalley Football Club. The approach was made by

Rangers, meetings were held and Whalley were delighted

to welcome the neighbours into their framework. Hangers will be adding

some promising youngsters to the combined pool of players, including many Kibble Valley area undcr-16 players. There is also an under-14 team.

The under-16s have won all

their pre-season games and also their games in the Black burn Sunday League. The squad is managed by Bob Gregson and Fred Uttley, and the undcr-14 team by Mrs Anne Uttley and Mr Alan Broadley.

Against Junior Rovers,

Simonstone Under-16s com pletely outclassed the opposi tion. They excelled in creative teamwork. The attack was capably led by Steven Walker, who scored seven goals, scored at their leisure in a 15- 0 victory. Match honours went to Alan O’Neill for his niany creative runs. Other scorers were Ormishcr, Andrew Blackburn, . and. O’Neill (2 each), McHugh and Kevin Alcock. The under-14 lads avenged an earlier defeat when they

disposed of Feniscowles in a 5-3 win at Whalley. They went in 3-1 up* at half time with goals from Paul Trainer, Chris Cooke and Paul At kinson. The game then became

had lost Hampson through injury which disrupted them for a crucial 10 mi nutes before he returned. In the second half

neither team created many scoring chances, the game drifted into the last 10 minutes with Clitheroe holding Sedgley in their own half for a period of pressure. This was relieved by a

high clearing kick from their fly-half which Wild- man at full-hack for Clitheroe failed to catch, the bounce favoured the on-coming winger who ac cepted the gift try to score under the posts. Despite a late rally,

Clitheroe had been beaten by a side who had taken their scoring chances well. For Clitheroe Dinsdale once again won plenty of ball from the scrums but the lineout, usually a source of possession, fell asleep after the opening salvo. Comfortable victory for reserves

Barrowford United 1, Clitheroe Res. 4

CLITHEROE’S second string returned to win ning ways on Saturday when they comfortably outplayed Barrowford. But for long periods it

was a scrappy game, mainly because of the small and bumpy bitch which could have done with a cut. Despite such conditions,

which made control dif ficult, Clitheroe went ahead with an early two- goal burst inside 10 mi nutes, first through Conti and then Morris. Barrowford began to

claw their way back into the game and reduced the arrears f iv e minutes before the break with a penalty, awarded for a foul in the area. C l i th e r o e a p p l ied

periods of long pressure in the second half, but could not find the “killer”

third goal. It came, in fact, from

a Barrowford defender who chipped a short goal lack back over his ’keep er’s head for what will surely be one o f the craziest goals o f the 1 season. A fourth goal from

Morris in the closing stages wrapped things up

for the visitors. Clitheroe: Howard, Baron,

Unbeaten in five

games Whalley Arms Celtic 1, Chatburn 0.

WHA LLEY Arms Celtic stretched their unbeaten run in the East Lanca shire League to five games by narrowly de feating a much improved Chatburn in a match that would have been a draw if justice had been done. Celtic manager John

Bargh was forced to make some changes after a couple of late problems arose and Tommy Brom ley, David Titterington and' David Metcalfe re

turned to the team. In c r e d ib ly , C e l t ic

swept into the lead in only 51 seconds with a goal that e v en tu a l ly proved to be the winner — and it was a very good goal. A five-man move in

volving David Tittering- ton, P e te r Wilkinson, David Metcalf and Ronnie F o s t e r ended w ith Tommy Bromley slam ming the ball past goal keeper Winckley from 10 yards. Celtic almost grab bed a second when David Metcalf hit the inside of the post with a clever lob. The second half fol

lowed' a similar pattern with Peter Doman and Donald Porter frustrating Chatburn with some ex cellent defensive work. Still, Chatburn had some chances but failed to take them. All in all a draw would

have been a fair result but Celtic ' got the goal that mattered. Chatburn can take heart from the fact that they played much better than of late. Outstanding for Celtic

were Peter Doman and Donald Porter. For Chat burn, Gary King and Rico Coulston gave good per formances.

OSWALDTWISTLE got

off to a good start in this East Lancashire League game and scored an early goal through McDowell. Nuttall pulled off a fine save to deny them further success and Waddington wasted a couple of easy chances. The villagers began to

shape better after the break and Tomlinson put them level in the 65th minute. Waddington kept up the pressure and were justly rewarded with a Bretherton goal; to take full points.

RIBBLE VALLEY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Good away win for Sabden

Royal Oak Victoria 0, Sabden 3

ROYAL Oak Victoria suffered their first defeat of the season when they came up against Sabden in this Ribble Valley League Marsden Division encounter.

The Clitheroe pub side

started the game with a re-shuffled team and struggled to get a grip of the match, particularly in midfield. Sabden took the lead

midway through the first half, Terry Davies scoring with a well-taken header. In a tactical move,

Sabden rearranged their back four and immediately went two goals up with an effort frflm Colin Maher. Terry Davies put the game to ta l ly beyond doubt with his second and Sabden’s third goal five minutes from time. The game was spon

sored by the Waterloo Timber Co.

jVBatch of

the day West Bradford 4, Read Utd 3

WEST BRADFORD won their way into the second round of the Ashley Smith Trophy with a well-de served win over previous ly undefeated Read Utd. A good crowd had gathered for what looked like the match of the day, and so it proved. Early exchanges pro

duced some near misses until Read took the lead through Farnworth. It was short-lived when Alan Blenkinship was on hand to tap the ball home a f te r good wo rk by Howard and Mellin. Clegg added another soon after wards to give West Brad ford a lead of 2-1 at half

time. The villagers soon went

fu r th e r ahead, Ray Howard scoring with a well-placed shot from the edge of the box. Bell reduced the ar

rears for Read but then Alan Blenkinship, who had beat his full back all the way for most of the game, slammed in a fourth for West Bradford after more good work by

Mellin. With only five minutes

left Bell volleyed in from a corner leaving West Bradford to hold on to their one goal lead. West Bradford: Barber, Ed

TWO late goals gave Whalley entry into the second round of the Dan Seed Trophy. There was some good end-to-end play. Ridding gave the villagers the lead but Trinity hit back with goals by Mitcheson and Renwick to take them into the second half in

front. Musker and Geddes re

stored Whalley’s lead but Neild put Trinity level and there were only 10 minutes left when Geddes and substitute Harrison settled the game in the villagers’ favour. Whalley: Wallbank, Ridding,

WITH only two weeks left in the Ribble Valley Summer Pool season the Joiners Arms had a night to celebrate when the A team defeated second placed Craven Heifer A in the Red League and B team won against the Blue League leaders Craven Heifer B to give them a chance of the run ners-up spot. Joiners A had a six

point lead over Craven A and Kings A at the begin ning of the night and they shook off Craven’s chal lenge with a 5-2 victory. But they are still chased by Kings who recorded an identical score to keep in touch with the leaders and open a five point gap between themselves and the team below. Pendie Witch moved up

to joint third with Craven thanks to a 5-2 win over bottom club Sun Inn. Blue League leaders

Craven Heifer B lost only their second match of the season. After a straight 15 victories stretching back to May they enter tained third placed Join ers B and went down by a single frame thus nan-ow ing the gap between them to nine points. Second placed Hodder

Bridge moved to within four points of the top by achieving their first ever victory over Kings B to set up a classic confronta tion with the leaders this evening. The Michael Hum

phreys singles knockout will reach the semi finals and final on Tuesday night at the White Horse. The Dog and Partridge playing their last season, have high hopes of lifting the trophy with two men in the last four — Rodney Templeman defeated Roy H a r g r e a v e s (C ra v en Heifer A) and Ray Green defeated Mick Devine (ICings A).
