Blackpool Mechanics 2, Clitheroe 2

TWO goals by striker David Proos earned Clitheroe a point at the seaside on Saturday.

The draw keeps went for goal , but •Clitheroe’s appeals for a

To rub salt in the

In the second half,

another mysterious deci sion gave Blackpool a pen alty, converted by Cow- burn, to leave Clitheroe with an uphill struggle.

Simonstone Whalley merger

WITH a fair chance of their village becoming part of the Ribbie Valley local authority

Simonstone Rangers have taken time by the forelock and ‘ become affiliated with

Whalley Football Club. The approach was made by

Rangers, meetings were held and Whalley were delighted to welcome the neighbours into their framework. Rangers will be adding

their pre-season games and also their games in the Black burn Sunday League. The squad is managed by Bob Grcgson and Fred Uttley, and the undcr-14 team by Mrs Anne Uttley and Mr Alan

Broadlcy. Rangers are in their third

season and last term' the under 16s were runners-up in the Darwen League and League Cup. Against Junior Rovers,

Simonstone Under-16s com pletely outclassed the opposi

Match^ honours went to Alan O’Neill for his many creative .runs. ^ Other scorers w ere Ormisher, Andrew Blackburn, . and O’Neill (2 each), McHugh and Kevin Alcock. The undcr-14 lads avenged

an earlier defeat when they disposed o f Fcniscowles in a 5-3 win at Whalley. They went in 3-1 up at half time with goals from Paul Trainer, Chris Cooke and Paul At

some promising youngsters to the combined pool o f players, including many Ribbie Valley area undcr-16 players. There is also an under-14 team. The undcr-16s have won all

been caught off-side. In this spell Clitheroe had lost Hampson through

injury which disrupted them for a crucial 10 mi nutes before he returned. In the second half

neither team created many scoring chances, the game drifted into the last 10 minutes with Clitheroe holding Sedgley in their own half for a period of pressure. This was relieved by a

high clearing kick from their fly-half which Wild- man at full-back for Clitheroe failed to catch, the bounce favoured the on-coming winger who ac cepted the gift try to score under the posts. Despite a late rally,

Clitheroe had been beaten by a side who had taken their scoring chances well. For Clitheroe Dinsdale once again won plenty of ball from the scrums but the lineout, usually a source of possession, fell asleep after the opening salvo. This though, ap plied to all the team who having scored two tries

-never -looked like adding further scores. Clitheroe XV: Wildman,

Hampson, Stephen Greatorex, T o rb e t t , Wardle, Stuart G rea to rex, P. Duxbury, Haworth, Dinsdale, Dubowski, Hoiden, Mercer, Holmes, Hoyles, Ridehalgh.

Comfortable victory for reserves

Barrowford United 1, Clitheroe Res. 4

C L ITH E RO E ’S second string returned to win ning ways on Saturday when they comfortably outplayed Barrowford. But for long periods it

was a scrappy game, mainly because of the small and bumpy bitch which could have done with a cut. Despite such conditions,

which made control dif ficult, Clitheroe went ahead with an early two- goal burst inside 10 mi nutes, first through Conti and then Morris. Barrowford began to

claw their way back into the game and reduced the arrears f iv e minutes before the break with a

penalty, awarded for a foul in the area. C l i th e r o e a p p l ied

periods of long pressure in the second half, but could not find the “killer” third goal. It came, in fact, from Barrowford defender

who chipped a short goal kick back over his ’keep er’s head for what will surely be one of the craziest goals o f the season. A fourth goal from Morris in the closing

stages wrapped things up for the visitors. Clitheroe: Howard, Baron,

Betts, .Richardson, Braithwaite; Cocker, Espirito, Stephenson; Conti, Ashworth,' Morns. Subs: Halliday and Stevenson.

Unbeaten in five games

Whalley Arms Celtic 1, Chatburn 0.

WHALLEY Arms Celtic stretched their unbeaten run in the East Lanca shire League to five games by narrowly de feating a much improved Chatburn in a match that would have been a draw if

justice had been done. Celtic manager John

Bargh was forced to make some changes after a couple of late problems arose and Tommy Brom ley, David Titterington and1 David Metcalfe re

turned to the team. In c r e d ib ly , C e lt ic

swept into the lead in only 51 seconds with a goal that ev en tu a l ly proved to be the winner — and it was a very good goal. A five-man move in

volving David Tittering- ton, Pe te r Wilkinson, David Metcalf and Ronnie F o s te r ended w ith Tommy Bromley slam ming the ball past goal keeper Winckley from 10 yards. Celtic almost grab bed a second when David Metcalf hit the inside of the post with a clever lob. The second half fol

lowed' a similar pattern with Peter Doman and Donald Porter frustrating Chatburn with some ex cellent defensive work. Still, Chatburn had some

chances but failed to take them. All in all a draw would

have been a fair result but Celtic ' got the goal that mattered. Chatburn can take heart from the fact that they played much better than of late. Outstanding for Celtic

were Peter Doman and Donald Porter. For Chat burn, Gary King and Rico Coulston gave good per formances.

Whalley AC: Wilson,

OSWALDTWISTLE got off to a good start in this

East Lancashire League game and scored an early goal through McDowell. Nuttall pulled off a fine save to deny them further success and Waddington wasted a couple of easy chances. The villagers began to

shape better after the break and Tomlinson put them level in the 65th minute. Waddington kept up the pressure and were

justly rewarded with a Bretherton goal to take full points.

the day West Bradford 4, Read Utd 3

WEST BRADFORD won their way into the second round of the Ashley Smith Trophy with a well-de served win over previous ly undefeated Read Utd. A good c rowd had gathered for what looked like the match of the day, and so it proved. Early exchanges pro

duced some near misses until Read took the lead through Farnworth. It was short-lived when Alan Blenkinship was on hand to tap the ball home a f te r good wo rk by Howard and Mellin. Clegg added another soon after wards to give West Brad ford a lead of 2-1 at half time. The villagers soon went

fu r th e r ahead, Ray Howard scoring with a well-placed shot from the edge of the box. Bell reduced the ar

rears for Read but then Alan Blenkinship, who had beat his full back all the way for most of the game, slammed in a

fourth for West Bradford after more good work by

Mellin. With only five minutes

left Bell volleyed in from a corner leaving West Bradford to hold on to their one goal lead. West Bradford: Barber, Ed
