Wilson gave Clitheroe an ea r ly le a d , but th e heavier Blackpool pack then put them under pressure.

- The Clitheroe pack

compensated for their scrummaging deficiency by mobility in the loose, and the fast centres con stantly threatened Black pool. Mick Fox, outstanding

for Clitheroe at wing for ward, increased their lead with a try scored after the Blackpool fullback’s kick was charged down. John Coates converted.-

IN another close finish, Clitheroe managed to' snatch a victory they had earned and then almost thrown away.

After a hesitant start,

which allowed the home side to move into a seven- point lead, Clitheroe set tled down but found diffi- c u l ty in co n v e r t in g pressure into points.

However, the strong

running of Price in the Centre finally brought about a try which Willans converted, so Clitheroe turned round only- one point down.

Continued pressure in

the second half produced no points until Willans dropped a superb goal fol lowing good work by Corless.

With less than five mi

n u te s left, Carnforth notched an uncoverted try due-to some slack play by Clitheroe.

This produced an in

stant reply with Fielding scoring a good try after some fine passing by the

centres.

THE R ib b le V a lley Ladies’ Town darts team started their Lancashire League campaign in fine style, with a win over Rossendale Ladies.

In an exciting contest

at th e Sp rin g Mill, Langho, the outcome of the match depended on the last game, with the

score 3-3. But Kath Wild, of the

Horse Shoe team, came through without any prob lems and ' notched a 2-0 win. '

Victories by similar

margins went to Maureen Waadington and Rose Brown (both Black Horse) and Barbara Parker (Spring Mill). Barbara Bleazard (Spring Mill) lost 2-1 as did Pat Taylor and Linda Briggs (both Join ers A). However, Linda had the highest score of

137. The next fixture for the

ladies is on Sunday when they travel to meet Heywood.

Chatburn 9, Henthorn 0

CHATBURN’S Geoff Young scored his second hat-trick in two games as his side strolled to an easy victory in their First Division clash with lowly Henthorn. It was Young who

opened the scoring in the 10th minute. The home team went further ahead when Hargreaves knocked in a penalty. The third goal came from ex-Henth- orn player Conti, then Hargreaves was in on the act again and Croft added another just before half time. It was a similar story

after the interval with Conti grabbing his second b e f o r e Y o u n g d id likewise. Musgroye hit Chat-

Ribblesdale AFC 3, Whalley Arms Celtic 0.. with

Whalley. Arms Celtic. The result was all the

more pleasing for them because the only league defeat they have suffered so far was inflicted upon them by Celtic. The early exchenges went Ribbles-

the pub side fell behind when George Smith headed home a George McAUy corner. Once in front, Ribbles

Brockhall 2, Victoria 1

AN own-goal by William son in the opening moves of th is long-awaited Aitken Shield second round tie did not dishear ten Brockhall. The gap between the

third division hospital side and their first division op ponents never seemed ap parent in the end to end play. There was some ex cellent goalkeeper on both sides.

Brockhall scored late in

the second half, the first after a Fox corner which led to Steve Bennett flick ing the ball into the net - from a g o a lm o u th

was the prelude to the second goal, Dave Hinks- man executing a flying header. Overall it was an enter

taining and exciting game producing some good foot

to catch Brockhall on their best form — and probably their best of the

season. The win puts Brockhall , , „

in the mood for another Division One scalp when they meet lowly-placed Trinity in the third round.

down 3-2 at Preston SC. Dave Knight and Robert Fielding won the first two games 3-0, but Empress let their chances slip when Keith Tomlinson and John Willis both lost 3-1 in the next two

games. In the decider Glen

Evans fought hard with out success as Empress’s fate was sealed. The thirds were also in
