Car tax change ‘a blow’ to rural areas
MOTORISTS in the rural areas of the' Ribble Valley who rely heavily on their cars will be hard hit by the Government’s plan to. abolish the vehicle excise duty, believes Coun. Bill Fleming, leader of the Ribble Valley Council. It was announced last - miles because of their
week that the tax, which is evaded at a cost of millions o f pounds a year will gradually be replaced over the next five years by a tax on petrol.. The move could, it is forecast, put 20 to 30p on a gallon of petrol.
Although Coun. Fleming
supports the idea in princi ple, he believes that the Government has not done its sums right and failed to realise what effect the move will have on rural motorists.
“People livingin the coun
try, "for whom the car is more of a necessity than a luxury, will be harder hit than someone living in a town,” he said.
A 20p increase in the
price of petrol means that a m o to rist travelling 10,000 miles a year in a car doing 30 m.p.g. would pay an extra £71 in petrol tax, instead of the present £50 duty, estimates Coun. Fleming.. “ I know of people in the
Ribble Valley who clock up a lot more than 10,000
work or where they live. I’m sure a n ’extra lOp tax on petrol would bring in sufficient money for the ' Government — after all
- it’s already taking 30p a gallon,” he said. Coun. Fleming’s fears
were echoed by Mr God frey Lofthouse, NFU sec retary for most of the Rib ble Valley. “The NFU, campaigned

vigorously against this idea because, make no mis take, farmers who drive thirsty vehicles, are going to suffer.. An economical Mini is not much use to a farmer who has to tow trailers,” he said. Another critic of the
change is Mr Peter Cra ven, joint owner of the Shireburn Garage, Hurst
Green. “Most of our customers
need their cars and they, are going to have
to.accept this move as a fact of life. It’s time some concessions were given to people living in the country who always have to pay top price,” he said.
Prepare now for the snow, Ministry tells farmers
WINTER seldom passes without some farms being cut-off by heavy snowfalls and last winter was no exception. When this happens there is always the risk of suffering to and loss of livestock if precautions have not been taken, to make fodder available where the danger is most likely.

tion and which have been adequately fed can with stand long spells of severe weather with no adverse effect. Ewes which have not had sufficient feed quickly lose this ability. Supplementary feeding of. concentrates or self-help blocks does not ensure ade quate nutrition unless some grazing is available and hay, therefore, is needed during severe weeather conditions.
Where winter snows dis
rupt the usual supply routes, it may-become impossible to carry a suffi cient quantity of fodder up to the hills or to other
^remote places without the a s s i s t a n c e o f t h e emergency services. -
This help is not always
available and even when it is it could be extremely, expensive; for instance, if
air transport is needed, a few hours work by even a small helicopter would cost several hundred pounds.
Most farmers earning a
living on the hills and .moorlands recognise the dangers and consequences only . too. well. They are responsible .enough to arrange hay at strategic feeding points before access becomes too dif ficult for their usual trans port.
This is a good insurance
which can save both money and loss of stock. Any farmer who has to call upon the. emergency ser- .vices must be prepared to meet'the charges in full. Farmers in the. difficult
areas are urged to make provision for their stock in advance. In the worst of winter storm conditions hay is of little use unless it is where it can-be reached by the animals. If ,the emergency services do have to be used, the local Ministry office will proyide details-of costs and assist in arranging the type of help required.
land followed the wedding o f Mr Michael Anthony Hudson and Miss Margot E lain e Morris at SS, M ich a e l and J o h n ’ s Church, Clitheroe, on Saturday. The b r id e g r o om , a
weaver, is the younger son of Mr and Mrs Horace Hudson, of Railway View. Road, Clitheroe, and the bride, a shop assistant, is the younger daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank Morris, of Lyndale Close, Wilp- shire. . The bride, given away

Her circular elbow-length veil was also trimmed with lace and held in place by a Juliet cap, white lace flpwers and pearls. She carried a cas cade of white bridal flow ers, yellow rosebuds and ivy.
Attendants were the

the bridegroom’s mother were of cinnamon-coloured cotton with a broderie ang- laise bodice and frilled hem. They wore half-cap headdresses of cream, and brown silk flowers and car ried p o s ie s ‘o f fre sh flowers. Best man was Mr Steven
Meeson, groomsmen were Mr David Tattersall and Mr David Smith, and ushers Mr Peter R. Morris and Mr Paul V. Hudson. The ceremony was per
formed by Fr Bernard Dobson and organist was Mrs H. Crompton.
