ONCE again Clitheroe Chess Club has made an encouraging start to the season in the second divi sion of the North East Lancs League. Having scored a win and
a draw in their first two matches, the team visited Nelson last week but were unable to field a full strength side, two key players being absent. After three hours play
four games had been com pleted with Derek North- age winning on board one after recovering from a poor opening. Brian Carr won a tough match on board two and
Eric Mansfield won an exciting game on board three. On board four Ber nard Shaw was unable to gain any advantage and finally lost. The two unfinished
games were on board five where Vincent Tudiseo was in a much inferior pos ition and decided to resign, and board six where 11th hour replacement Steve Sutcliffe" had a very even, position with no apparent advantage to either player. The position was adjudi

TWO Clitheroe Venture Scouts had a very success ful trip to the River Usk in South Wales on Sunday for the National Canoe Rank ing Events organised by the British Canoe Union. The test was over a dis
tance of 5'A miles, and Duncan Eglin came first in the. Youth section, and 13th in the Seniors with a time of 30 minutes, against the winners time of 28 minutes. Stephen Dent was first
in -the Junior section and 19th in the Seniors with a time of just ov e r 30 minutes. Together with their fel
low canoeist Phil Dean, of Accrington, they came third in the team event.
Overturned
CLITHEROE fireman were called to swill away petrol after a car over turned in Waddington on Thursday evening. The driver of the car' was unhurt.
