BEAUTY-SPOT IS ,

1 WRONGPLACE 1 FOR INDUSTRY ,,

PLANS to use agricultural buildings at' Holder Bridge Barn, Higher Hodder, as a base for, a garden and agricultural contracting business were this week described as 1‘shocking” by a Ribble Valley councillor. Coun. John Walmsley

(Waddington) told the Devel opment Sub-Committee it

would be a great shame to have an industrial estate develop near a beauty .spot like Hodder.Bridge.

"If we allow one person to

use one building there is always the chance that others may apply. We would all like to see them.have a suitable site, but to have a big exten sion of industry in this part of th e c o u n t ry w o u ld .b e shocking.”

The applicant, Mr D. A.

Brown (Brown Bros.), said it was his intention to use the; site for storing and main taining a tractor, two trailers, two domestic-size grass mow ers, a domestic-size cultivator

and a car trailer. A diesel storage tank would also be installed.

Only maintenance work

would be .carried on in the barn with a possible maximum of 10 hours a week.

ROSE FETE in the Parish Hall,

Saturday, June 19th, 1976 Parade 2-30 p.m. — Crowning 3 p.m.

Crowning Ceremony by Miss Heselton (former nurse)

received from nearby resi dents ranged from the possi bility of noise, banging, fumes and smoke caused by servic ing the plant items , to obstruction to tradesmen and the possibility of harm coming to a collection of ornamental water fowl at Hodder View. Coun. Bill Fleming (Billing-

ton) said the council had to have some sympathy with the applicant.

“I don’t think it is the case

that they want to go there, but it is perhaps the only place they can go. There is employ ment involved here and really it is a question of finding an alternative site."

Coun. Geoffrey Ainsworth

(Salesbury) said he did not think it was the right place for small-scale development of any kind.

The suggestion of Coun.:

Fleming that members visit the site was rejected on a vote and the application was turned down for three reasons inappropriatencss in a rural area (Forest of Bowland Area of O u ts tan d in g ' Natural Beauty), possibility of further similar applications, and addi tional use of a private access road and traffic dangers to other road users.

Caravan plan

refused

A PLAN to construct a site for 15 caravans on land behind the Commercial Hotel, Gis- burn, was turned down by the Ribble Valley Council's Devel opment Sub-Committee. The applicant J. R. W.

Heyworth, proposed to use the land as a touring site for caravans. In a report to the committee, Chief Architect and Planning Officer Mr Charles Wilson said that in many respects the proposal was reasonable in planning terms. However, local residents

and tlie Parish Council had o b jected , mainly on the g ro u n d s th a t th e re a re already more than sufficient spaces on sites in the area. The application was refused

for four reasons. It would be a hazard to traffic on the main road; vehicles entering and leaving the site would conflict with vehicles using the hotel car park; increased pedestrian activity on the main road would also be a traffic hazard, and similar development along the main road would be dif ficult to oppose.

Useful tips Members of Subden WI

were given a talk and demon stration on flower arranging by Mrs Rushton, of Read, at Monday’s meeting in the coun cil school. In a very short time she produced some wonderful examples of floral art and gave the members some use ful tips. All the arrangements wore raffled at the end of the meeting. A competition for a miniature flower arrangement was won by Mrs S. Spencer. Members were also given

an account of the WI annual meeting in London by a member of their link institute at Fence.

Trumps At a Sabden Over 60s dub

whist and domino drive at St Mary’s Catholic Club, winners were: Ladies — Mrs South- well, Mrs N. Bruge. Gents — Mr Sims, Mr Harrison. Mr Sims also won the raffle.

Downham

Cricket Clitheroe Police had a five

wicket victory over Downham at the Barley Field recently. But the village side had bet

ter luck on Sunday when they defeated a team of Lancaster University staff by eight wic kets. Umpires were Mr T. S. Pringle and Mr K. Whittaker. Mrs S. Reed was scorer. The cricketers now have a

caravan from which refresh ments are served and this was used for the first time on Sun day. It was paid for by fund raising events held by mem bers and their wives.
