Axe for village school

-THE tiny St John’s CE Prim ary School at Hurst Green has been recommended for clo sure by a county- council sub committee. Closure notices were prop

osed for the school and four others in Lancashire at Tues day’s meeting of the Schools Sub-Committee.

. Parents can object to the decision by making direct rep resentations to the Scretary of State for Education. A decision on whether to

serve , a closure notice on Pendleton and Mearley CE Primary School was deferred by the sub-committee. The cost of running such a

small school as St John’s and th e n um b e r of te a c h e r s needed in relation to the pupils were two of the main reasons for the decision. But a letter from the mana

gers of the school made it plain that they did not support the idea. They felt it would be “exceedingly undesirable.” The letter said: “I t is much

easier to foster a community spirit and create an attitude of caring for others if primary education takes place in the com m u n ity where people live.”
