They formed a small community with a church>and me,j it Kirk-By — or "Church Town’/ — in Luncsdalc. Tlicrc is. however, evidence of a church a t Kirkby

Lonsdale in Saxon days. In the reign of William Rufus (1087 to 1100) the Parish

of Kirkby Lonsdale among others was granted by the frown to Ivo Tailboia, one of the Conqueror’s War

la.

^ The Abbey of St Mary’s a t York had been founded between 1012 and 10<i6 and it was considered the duty of jhc wealthy to increase its endowments by gifts. I t is presumed that the church granted to St Mary’s Abbey wa^the old Saxon one of which there is now no trace. The present edifice was probably built between 1093

and ll30. A building of even g re a te r magnificence was contemplated hut, for reasons unknown, there was a change of plan and the church was completed in a much pjiincr style. Over the years the church has been restored and many additions made. . Outstanding architectural features arc the Norman

archway beneath the tower and, near the west door, the •ix massive Norman columns, no two of which are alike. The tower has undergone more than one reconstruction

and heightening, the last time being in 1705. There arc six which were recast in 1826.

A HOLIDAY in the sun could well become more than ju s t a dream for some of Clitheroe's deprived children if Mr Fred Cowperthwaite realises one of his big ambitions.

Haulage firm wins planning

appeal

A WHALLEY haulage firm lias won its appeal against the refusal of the Ribble Valley Council to allow Pcndle Gar age, Clitheroe Road, to be used as a repair depot for the firm’s vehicles.

However, in granting per

mission to Bulcock Brothers, Mr 12. J. Dunslan. who con d u cted a local inq u iry on behalf of the Department of the Environment in May, has imposed a two-year time limit and other conditions.

He has limited the permis

sion, to the firm only, and the premises are not to be used

for any purpose other than as a repair depot.

He also s t ip u la ted th a t

repair or maintenance work m u s t not be done on the forecourt or more than 50 feet

’ from the back of the present g a ra g e building. No work must be done on Sundays nor between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. on weekdays^

THE first official fund-raising event for “ Project J Mobile” was a coffee evening a t the home of Mr and Airs Malcolm Brewer, of Green Drive, Clitheroe. About 80 people attended and helped to raise L7U. A

inspector noted that the pre mises, formerly Lamb Roe Garage, had been in use since 1930 and he therefore consi dered Bulcock’s application as being for permission to con tinue using them.

He saiil the use of Pendle

However,, taking account of the large adjoining industrial premises and the fact that the appellants intend o p e r a t in g o n ly a limited number of vehicles, he is of opinion that the impact on the character of the area is so minimal as to be of no material consequence.
