' A WALK ’ BY THE RIBBLE
A QUARTET of heron was spotted by Clitheroe Natural ists on th e ir walk by the River Kibble on Saturday.
f Led by Mr Richard Blades, a party of 20 s e t out from H u rs t Green to the river, via P a rk e r Well and Raid Deep Wood. Their walk upstream
took.them to Jumbles, where the Jumbles rocks are exposed in th<p river, and on towards the confluence of th e Caldor and Kibble. They passed Hodder Foot,
where the waters of the Hod d er join the Ribble, continu in g via Winkley Hall and Spring Wood back to Hurst Green and then back by Edis- ford to Clitheroe. • Other features noted by the
p a r ty w e re wild berberis, bracken and ladybird galls, and a profusion of ladybirds on the grass. The next nature walk, on
August 2nd, will go to Beacon Fell and Broekbottoms by pri
vate coach, leaving from the station a t 1 p.m. Members wishing to* go arc advised to give th e ir names to Mr R. Bleazard in good time.
Mortgage scheme closed
PEOPLE who arc thinking of o b ta in in g house mortgages from th e Ribble Valley Coun cil are out of luck. This year’s allocation has been used up and the-best they can do will be to ap p ly to a building society. Mr Ronald Pickup, of the
Borough Treasurer’s Depart ment, told the Housing Com mittee th a t the council’s mort gage scheme lias been closed until next April. The reason fo r this is a change in Govern ment policy. Local councils have been
pegged back to half the total amount they loaned last year,
. Ribble Valley’s figure being £17,000. In a report to the commit
t e e , Mr G o rd o n Onslow, Borough Treasurer, says th a t
a s th e council had already given mortgages amounting to this figure, the Department of th e E n v iro nm en t is being asked for an extra £18,000 to honour fu r th er commitments
already entered into before Whitehall changed its mind. L oans fo r th e repair or
improvement of houses are not affected by the new policy an d will c o n t in u e to be,
available as in the past. n

Headmaster’s talk on
Middle Ages M EM B E R S o f C l i th e ro e Probus Club hoard a talk on p h y s io lo g y in th e Middle Ages, from Mr Gerald Hood, headmaster of Clitheroe Boys’ Grammar School. Mr Hood said th a t there
was a great deal of preoccupa tion with physiology in the Middle Ages, which coincided w ith th e r is e of character s tu d i e s in S h ak e sp e a r ian
tragedies. People at the time, said Mr
Hood, believed in the exist ence of four basic properties which combined to produce the four elements — fir?, air, water, and earth. Three virtues controlled the
life in a human body. The “animal” controlled muscular functions, the ‘'natural” con trolled the passions, and the “vital” controlled man’s life force. Mr Hood was thanked by
Mr G. Wrigley (Bolton-by- Bowland), a representative of the Old Boys’ Association on the School Council. Mr K. Williamson, presid
