Variety . A bustling little place, with/

a population of about 2,000, Kirkby Lonsdale has so much to offer visitors, be they just pausing to break a journey, or making a day of it. For such a small town, the

range of shops and variety*of high-class goods on" offer is quite surprising. Arid , from behind the counters comes that old world courtesy and attention so sadly lacking in • our bigger towns. Lots of little passageways,

nooks and crannies add to the shopper’s enjoyment! The vis itor seeking refreshment is particularly well catered for — the town has six licensed ’ residential hotels — with everything from a cup of tea

•and snack to a feast on offer. Although there is an abs

ence of main through-traffic, the narrow streets are prone

the market traders move in, and the town bustles with activity. The market comprises

about 20 stalls, set up around an ornate stone shelter which is .a popular spot for the locals to pass the time of day. . Half day closing is on a Wednesday. Away from the market and

shopping area, the visitor is soon immersed in scenery of unrivalled beauty. Well worth a visit is the

ancient parish church of St Mary, and a stroll through the

churchyard leads to a view of unsurpassed splendour. It is a scene which has given

inspiration to countless gener ations of artists, and was par

ticularly loved by England’s greatest landscape painter. Turner. It is called Ruskin’s View,

after John Ruskin, who pen ned the following description: “The valley of the Lune at Kirkby is one of the loveliest scenes in. England, therefore in the world. Whatever moor land hill, and sweet river, and

English forest foliage can be at their best is gathered here . .. . I do not know in all my own country, still le s s ‘ in France or Italy, a place more naturally divine, or a more priceless possession of true

‘Holy Land’.” Legend 1 Ruskin’s View is also the

starting point for a pleasant stroll alorig the banks of the Lune to Devil’s Bridge, a popular gladed picnic spot. Its history is somewhat vague and surrounded by legend.

The most ^ popular assigns

its construction to the Devil, who is said to have built itin one night to fulfil an agree ment with an old woman who lived nearby.

The bridge lies only a short

distance from the main road crossing opened in 1932 to divert heavy traffic from the town. There are several other

walks down charming country lanes, embracing fine views of the Pennine Range, and the Crag above the village with its ridges and terraces of limes tone rock is well worth the climb. But whatever your tastes

there’s most likely something for you to enjoy at Kirkby Lonsdale. Why not give it a try?
