Operator Of Poland Offshore Exploration Well Unveils Oil And Gas Results
Wolin East-1 could be Poland’s largest ever discovery.
The company that recently reported promising early results from an offshore gas exploration well in Poland has announced the well has also discovered oil.
Privately-owned Central European Petroleum (CEPetro) on Monday said its 100%-owned Wolin East-1 well hit a 62-metre hydrocarbon column with excellent reservoir properties for oil and gas production in the Main Dolomite formation.
The Wolin East discovery is estimated to contain mean recoverable resources of oil, gas and natural gas liquids totalling 200 million barrels of oil equivalent, the company said.
In March, CEPetro said data obtained while drilling indicated a pre-drill resource potential of up to 16.5 billion cubic metres of recoverable gas and 10.3 million cubic metres of recoverable liquids in the main Dolomite Ca2 reservoir target.
The company today said the oil and gas resources in Wolin East constitute the largest conventional hydrocarbon field yet discovered in Poland, and one of the largest
conventional oil discoveries in Europe in the past decade.
Chief Executive Rolf Skaar said he believes Wolin East is more than just a promising field – “it represents a shared opportunity to unlock the full geological and energy potential of the Baltic Sea.”
In response to a query by Upstream, Skaar said Wolin East had been drilled as a gas prospect but there was always a chance of discovering oil due to existing oilfields in the area.
Wolin East had discovered a separate structure with undersaturated oil. The well was tested downhole at two different depths “where we were able to also obtain downhole fluid samples.”
“We have waited until now to announce the oil discovery as we wanted to obtain the lab report confirming the oil parameters, as well as perform reservoir simulation studies to look at recovery factors.” added Skaar.
He did not disclose the oil/gas ratio, but said studies are under way to evaluate development concepts.
Drilling of the well began in late 2024 using Noble Corporation’s jack-up drilling unit Noble Resolve.
