WHITE GOLD OR PLATINUM: WHICH SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?

When choosing jewellery, particularly an engagement or wedding ring, the decision often comes down to more than simply finding a style you love. The metal itself can influence the appearance, durability, maintenance and long-term cost of a piece.


Two of the most popular choices for a contemporary white-metal look are white gold and platinum and although they may appear almost identical, they have some important differences.


White gold isn’t naturally occurring. It is created by combining yellow gold with other metals, such as palladium, to produce its distinctive pale colour. Because pure gold is relatively soft, these additional metals also give white gold the strength and durability needed for everyday jewellery. White gold is commonly finished with rhodium plating, which gives it an exceptionally bright, reflective white appearance. Over time, this plating can wear away, meaning the jewellery may need to be professionally re-plated to restore its original finish.


Platinum, by contrast, is a naturally occurring precious metal and is considerably rarer than gold. It is also denser and heavier, so an identical piece will generally feel more substantial when made in platinum. Its strength and durability make it particularly well suited to jewellery designed to be worn every day.


So, which is right for you? White gold offers the appeal of a bright, modern finish at a more accessible initial price, although it may require occasional maintenance. Platinum typically costs more upfront, but its naturally white colour does not require rhodium plating, potentially reducing the need for ongoing upkeep. Ultimately, the choice is a balance between budget, aesthetics, lifestyle and how much maintenance you are prepared to give your jewellery. Both metals offer timeless appeal - the best choice is the one that feels right for you.
