PROTECT YOUR HOME Make sure your policy i s right f o for you with the hel p of the e xperts Are you sure you’re insured?
When choosing home insurance, we often go for the quickest or cheapest option, hoping for the best. While this approach might seem convenient, there’s a risk of rushing and not considering the quality of cover or the actual value of our possessions. In reality, insurance is far from a one-size fits all scenario. Glenn Brown at NFU Mutual Central Warwickshire explains more.

“Estimating the value of our homes and contents isn’t something we do regularly, but inaccurately calculating the rebuild cost or the total val ue of your contents could leave you open to the risk of being underinsured. And unfortunately, most don’t realise this until they come to make a claim.”
‘To be ‘underinsured’ means that the amount you’re covered for is less than the cost of rebuilding, replacing, or repairing’
g,
To be “underinsured” means that the amount you’re covered for i s less than the cost of reb uilding, replacing,, or repairing. For example, if you had a fire at your home and the value of your contents is stated at £70,000, but the actual cost to replace your contents is £150,000. It’s particularly important that those wh o live in larger homes or hav e many
,
expensive items – perhaps jewellery and watches, fine art or collections, and tech – are mindful that standard insurance may not fully protect them or include features such as agreed values and access to specialist repair/replacement services.
So how c an you avoid underinsurance?: • Try and account for anything you would
need to replace in event of a claim – include things like soft furnishings and furniture, as well as the more obvious high-value items lik e techn ology.
y.
• Estimate the cost as new,, rather than the price yo u paid.
• Consider whether the value has changed for any item s such as antiques or art collections.
• Don’t for get items in storage or at the bank. • Check your policy for any s et limits for
valuables and single items such as jewellery. • Review your cover regularly and if you’re
unsure, talk through with a professional. To find out more about NFU Mutual o fin
