With Christmas just a few weeks away, people’s thoughts are invariably turning to present buying and shopping for their luxury food and drink items to enjoy over the festive season.
Last year Christmas celebrations were largely muted for most people so this year many will want to make the most of the season with family and friends.
Not only did the pandemic curtail our social events, for many it also made us question the way we shop. While shopping online was vital for many people, others saw how it was the smaller independents in our local villages and towns who were the ones that really went that extra mile to ensure we got the items we needed at such a difficult time.
Many vowed they would remember the good work these local shops did to help us all at such a difficult time and now is the time to show our appreciation for their efforts.
The Wye Valley area is fortunate to have many towns with lots of independent shops selling everything from homemade chocolates and cheeses to designer clothes and quirky household accessories. With so much choice, it’s the perfect way to do your shopping. Not only do you get great service, you can actually see the products before you buy and benefit from friendly and personal service – all whilst keeping your local time alive and thriving.
A consumer group which promotes shopping local estimates that if every adult spends just £5 each week in their local shops, it would add £13.5billion per year into our local economies – that’s jobs for local people, better facilities and money coming into the towns where we live.
IT’S A WIN-WIN SITUATION.
For those still nervous about getting out and about, many of these shops also offer an online and delivery service too so well worth a look before logging onto the big multinationals’ sites.
In addition to the wide array of shops the region has to offer, with food and drink outlets to keep you refreshed as well of course, many of our local towns stage festive events in the run up to Christmas too.

Hereford city promises a 'Christmas Spectacular' of world class walkabout performers, live bands and the ‘Hereford Gift Card Golden Ticket Treasure Hunt’ for this this December. Mike Truelove, Chief Executive for Hereford City Life, a brand created by the Hereford Business Improvement District (Hereford BID) to promote Hereford, explained following last year’s difficult Christmas, Hereford BID has worked closely with the city council to put on wow factor entertainment around the city that will include acts such as iGlobot - a giant walking robot that children will love, Nanook the wondering Polar Bear with his special friend, Xania the Ice Fairy, or Mysterian, the famous street magician.
He said: “There is every reason to come to Hereford this year - it will be tremendous fun that people will not want to miss."
As part of their festive offerings, there will be free parking at Old Market on the last three Wednesdays before Christmas as well as free parking after 4pm in all council 'Pay & Display' car parks in the city centre including Maylord Shopping Centre, Old Market Shopping Centre and on-street parking. (Friar Street and private car parks are excluded from this offer.)
