Here in Gloucestershire, we are lucky to be the base of choice for one of the most high-profile glasshouse manufacturers in the country – Gabriel Ash. In fact, they are the only timber greenhouse manufacturer endorsed by the RHS.
Handcrafted from high-quality Canadian red cedarwood which is aesthetically pleasing and easy to upkeep, the materials used provide natural resistance to rot, decay and pests, ensuring longevity and durability.
All of their greenhouses are constructed using precision mortise and tenon joints, which for those of us not familiar with such terms, in a nutshell, equates to a strong and secure construction. Their environmental credentials are strong too as all greenhouses and coldframes manufactured by Gabriel Ash are PEFC Certified, with this accreditation working throughout the entire forestry supply chain to promote good practice and en- sure timber and non-timber forest products are produced with respect to the highest ecological, social and ethical standards. We are blessed to have one of Gabriel Ash’s beautiful RHS Portico models on set for ITV’s ‘Love Your Weekend’ with Alan Titchmarsh, the perfect backdrop to many a filming session!
Of course, glasshouses do not all look as we have come to expect, take the humungous biomes at The Eden Project – like giant blown up bubble wrap encompassing a former clay pit. Or make your way to The National Botanic Garden of Wales in Carmarthenshire, as I did recently, and gaze in wonder at the world’s largest single span glasshouse. Futuristic and fabulous!

If you do not have the space or funding for your own greenhouse, then fear not, for a coldframe warmly awaits your attention. Widely available in wood or aluminium, I particularly love the chalky white Victorian growhouse available from Crocus, made from powder coated steel and toughened glass.
Catch Camilla alongside Alan Titchmarsh on Sunday 4th May on ITV’s ‘Love Your Weekend’. Also, join her every Monday on ‘Alan Titchmarsh’s Gardening Club’ on ITV from 2-3pm.
A classic garden feature, even without any plants inside! Or how about the very 21st century Light-Booster Coldframe from Haxnicks?! Sounding like something out of a sci-fi movie, it features a foiled fabric back which can increase light levels by up to 50%, your pampered plants will find this most pleasing. At £39.99, you can’t go wrong!
Whichever option you choose, all of these structures share the same common interest of protecting a plethora of beloved botanical beauties and ensuring a glorious plant filled summer ahead.
