THE QUILL & SCHOLAR A HEARTWOOD INN WITH CULINARY SOPHISTICATION


For my starter, I opted for the chicken liver parfait, accompanied by a delightful red onion marmalade and toasted brioche. The parfait was creamy and rich, with the sweetness of the marmalade cutting through beautifully, while the toasted brioche provided a satisfying crunch. AJ chose the wild mushroom tartine, topped with cep puree, a perfectly poached free-range egg, and drizzled with truffle oil. Each bite was a symphony of flavours, the earthy mushrooms harmonising exquisitely with the truffle.

The Quill & Scholar has undergone an extensive refurbishment to renovate this enchanting mock-Tudor building mirroring Heartwood’s usual attention to detail, with a few singular quirky touches.


The pub boasts numerous intimate corners and snug spots perfect for uninterrupted conversation. It also features an inviting, open and airy garden room as well as larger spaces suitable for all occasions. The courtyard, adorned with a covered pergola accessible through stunning glazed doors, enhances the pub’s charm and cosiness, providing visitors with an Inn with both dimension and character.


Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by Stuart, whose hospitality set the tone for our evening. We settled into the lovely garden room, a picturesque space thoughtfully decorated with just the right amount of lighting, creating a very inviting atmosphere.


Our evening began with a refreshing glass of prosecco, a perfect accompaniment as we perused the thoughtfully curated menu.


For mains, I indulged in the cod fillet served with a vibrant butter bean cassoulet enriched with chorizo. The cod was flaky and perfectly cooked, while the cassoulet provided a hearty, flavourful backdrop. AJ's choice of 8-hour slow-cooked shoulder of highland venison was exceptional—tender, savoury, and enhanced by the Grand Veneur sauce and fresh blackberries. A side of grilled hispi cabbage, cooked with black garlic and Grana butter, perfectly complimented both mains.


To finish, I couldn't resist the Autumn Still Life dessert. The chestnut and coffee parfait, paired with meringue, frosted pecans, and a delicate tuile, was a seasonal celebration on a plate. AJ's pistachio soufflé, served with Jude's chocolate ice cream, was light yet decadent.


Overall, The Quill & Scholar delivers an enchanting dining experience with exquisite dishes, attentive service, and a lovely ambiance. It’s a must-visit for food lovers in Lichfield, book now and give it a try, places also still available over the Christmas period.
