FINE & COUNTRY MAKING A STRESS-LESS MOVE

Moving house is a majorly stressful life event, but with careful planning and organisation, it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Jonathan Handford from Fine & Country Leamington Spa provides tips for making your move as stress-free as possible.

You may be excited about moving, but there’s no denying that it also represents a major task. By breaking down the moving process and tackling it step by step, you can ensure a smoother, more manageable transition to your new home.

The first, and perhaps most important, step is to start early. Leaving everything until the last minute is a guaranteed way to increase your stress levels. Begin planning your move as soon as possible once you’ve made the decision to move. Create a timeline for what needs to be done, by when. This should include tasks like booking a removalist, or moving van, decluttering, packing, and notifying utility providers. By spreading the workload over several weeks, you reduce the risk of being overwhelmed as moving day approaches.

Decluttering before packing is also a good idea. There is no point in taking items you no longer need or won’t use in your new home. Moving is an opportunity to reassess your belongings and decide what to keep, donate, sell, or discard. Starting this process early gives you time to dispose of any unwanted items. The fewer items you have to pack, the simpler the process becomes.

When it comes to packing, organisation is key. Start with non-essential items – things you won’t need in the short term, such as books, seasonal clothing, or decorative items. Label each box clearly with the contents and the room it belongs to. This will make unpacking much easier. It’s also worth packing an essentials box that contains everything you’ll need for the first few days in your new home. This could include toiletries, bedding, important documents, chargers, and basic kitchen items, like a kettle and

mugs. Having easy access to these essentials saves you from needing to rummage through boxes right away.

Hiring a reliable removal company also significantly reduces the stress of moving day. It’s worth researching different companies, reading reviews, and getting quotes to find the best service for your needs. Book them in early and make sure they offer any additional services you might require, such as packing for fragile items, furniture assembly, or storage solutions.

To keep stress levels low, it’s also important to stay flexible. Moving day may bring bad weather, traffic delays, or last-minute changes. Accepting that things might not go exactly to plan helps you maintain a calm, problem-solving mindset. Have a contingency plan for any unexpected situations, like a nearby hotel in case there are delays in accessing your new property, or keeping snacks and drinks at the ready if things take longer than expected.

Another critical aspect of moving is managing your utilities and services. Contact your providers to arrange for services such as electricity, gas, water, and internet to be disconnected at your old home and reconnected at your new address. It helps to maintain a list of places where you will need to update your

address, from your bank, to insurance companies, subscriptions, your driving licence and the like. You may also want to consider arranging for mail redelivery for anything you’ve missed.

Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Moving is a big task, and having extra hands reduces the pressure, boosting your spirits and allowing you to focus on the excitement of starting a new life in your new home.
