Emilia Perri is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art, where she was awarded the 4th year W.O. Forsyth Award for Excellence in Painting. A few years ago she was awarded the Reed T. Cooper Bursary in Visual Art and recently she was the recipient of the Orangeville Arts and Culture 2021 Established Artist of the year award. For years Emilia has been working in an expressive style using quality
highly
pigmented fluid and high flow acrylics to create large abstract paintings, completed mainly on canvas. These paintings are luscious, colourful depictions of emotional responses to the grandeur of nature and the relationship we cultivate with it and in doing so, the relationship that we cultivate with ourselves and each other. Her inspirational travels include many summer trips to Manitoulin Island, a natural
and inspirational painting area for her for many years. Over the years she has developed friendships and a great interest in the work and stories of many First Nation artists who live and work in the area. During her earlier travels to Europe, she became fascinated by crumbling walls and
buildings, and the textures and tapestries of human life that are left behind by them. She discovered how human it is to want to rebuild through the layers of various life experiences to arrive at the place we can call “home”. To Emilia this is where the painting reaches a level of completion. She has explored the battle and balance between man and nature in her work, using a
multitude of layers of transparent paints that are scraped, dripped, blended, smoothed, exposed and concealed, eventually arriving at a harmony that is unique to each work as well as a recognizable feeling of comfort that she identifies as home or as self. Much like life, she retains various glimpses to show the myriad of experiences that we all go through, which in the end form and connect us to ourselves and to each other. The Reed T. Cooper Bursary in Visual Arts allowed her to travel to the Yukon
where she was able to completely immerse herself in wild nature via a canoe paddling trip on the Yukon River for 375 kilometers. This has inspired her new large abstracts, and instilled in her the inspiration to explore many new possibilities. Originally from Toronto, Emilia has called Hockley Valley her home since 1990,
where she has always been a very prolific painter. She has 3 children who also work as artists in film, music, animation and visual art. Because of all the art in her life, she has been blessed with a very rich life.
