Running parallel to MEDICA, COMPAMED focuses on the technologies behind finished medical products, covering manufacturing systems, components, materials and surface solutions. Regulation, market access and quality assurance will also feature alongside software, digitalisation and cybersecurity in the exhibition and professional programme. A COMPAMED forum held in May offered an early indication of some of the technologies likely to shape discussions in November. Its focus on emergency and intensive care covered continuous patient monitoring, biosensors, vascular access and remote robotic intervention.
Some 78,000 trade visitors attend the two events.
Smart monitoring patches, multi-channel ECG wearables and an endovascular robotic system were among the technologies presented. Much of the discussion centred on a common problem: adding capability to medical devices without adding complexity for users.
iniaturised monitoring, biosensors, robotic intervention and technologies designed for pressured healthcare environments
Monitoring moves closer to the patient Wearable monitoring is pushing more measurements beyond conventional bedside equipment. Smart patches presented in May could record parameters including ECG, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, pulse wave measurements and sweat-related data. Development work in this area includes continuous monitoring for conditions such as heart failure and high blood pressure, as well as lower-cost triage patches using optical sensors to support rapid assessment. Wearable medical technology need not be confined to watches and wristbands; patches, textiles and other body-worn formats allow sensors to be positioned according to the measurement required. The wrist still has advantages for cardiac monitoring. One device presented at the forum used six-channel ECG recording, bringing more detailed cardiac measurements into a compact wearable format.
Biosensors offer another route to continuous or
near-continuous measurement. Platforms capable of detecting glucose, lactate and peptides have potential uses in intensive care, organ transport and cell and gene therapies. In cell therapy, microsensors could monitor processes directly inside culture vessels, reducing the need for repeated manual sampling and laboratory analysis.
These developments put demanding requirements on the components beneath the finished device. Sensors and electronics must become smaller, while packaging, connections, power systems and materials must still perform reliably in clinical and manufacturing environments.
Designing for pressure
Smaller does not automatically mean simpler. Emergency and intensive care equipment may be used quickly, under pressure and while clinicians are dealing with several tasks at once. A connector that is easy to confuse, a poorly differentiated control or an unnecessarily complicated preparation step can
