AI on the factory floor

As AI moves deeper into medical device manufacturing, continuous validation and fi t-for-purpose models are becoming critical to responsible adoption. Annabel Kartal-Allen speaks with Siemens Healthineers’ Paavana Sainath, Columbus’s Juanita Schoen and Ketryx founder and CEO Erez Kaminski about keeping AI safe, sustainable and under control.

rtificial intelligence (AI) is currently being explored or implemented in various domains, including medical technology development,

device functionality, quality control, process optimisation, end-of-line testing, defect detection, safety report drafting and digital-twin applications for operational monitoring.

As AI becomes embedded in a highly regulated sector such as medical device manufacturing, manufacturers should ensure that AI systems are appropriately risk-assessed, verified and validated for their intended use. They must also maintain evidence

and controls sufficient to meet applicable quality and regulatory requirements. With these factors in mind, AI governance and validation are becoming increasingly important, especially as businesses explore AI agents designed to perform tasks with a degree of autonomy.

Incorporating AI responsibly As AI makes its way onto the manufacturing floor, it has become more important than ever to incorporate the technology responsibly, says Paavana Sainath, SVP and head of R&D engineering, core lab solutions at
