The rise of intelligent fluidics
Intelligent technologies are transforming fl uidic medical devices into connected systems that can sense, analyse and respond in real time. Claire Read speaks to BD’s Igor Nesterenko and mechanical engineer Rucha Natu to examine how AI, sensing and connectivity are changing fl uidic medical devices, and what that means for their design, manufacture and deployment.
A
sk BD’s Igor Nesterenko about the intelligent technologies having the biggest impact on medical device fluidics, and he offers quite the list. Such technologies, which enable devices to understand situations in real time, detect changes and react accordingly, are becoming an increasingly notable part of fluidic medical devices. And they’re helping bring about what he characterises as an important leap forward. “The future of fluidics is about far more than moving fluids through a device,” stresses Nesterenko, who is vice-president of portfolio

management for BD. Describing his company’s focus in this area, he speaks of “connecting data, technology and human expertise in ways that were previously unimaginable”.
Consider that, and his view of where the most significant advances in fluidic medical devices are occurring comes as little surprise. “[They’re] occurring at the intersection of connectivity, sensing, analytics and workflow integration,” Nesterenko says. He points to intelligent technologies such as embedded sensors, “which are improving visibility into device and therapy
